2. Assignment Instructions
The Week 5 Content Analysis assignment is designed to build understanding of course content by asking you to make connections between readings, lectures, and course themes.
In your Content Analysis (CA), only use evidence from assigned readings, lectures, and sections in your responses. Include in-text citations for the sources used, whether videos, readings, weekly notes, etc. Avoid including lengthy quotes. Instead, paraphrase and explain the relevance and significance of the selected passages or video segments in your own words as much as possible. When paraphrasing or summarizing a source, also cite it with an in-text citation. For briefer quotations, use quotation marks when citing words that are not your own. For in-text citations, give the author’s name and the page number, if there is one. You do not need a Works Cited page because you only use course resources.
Word count: 1000 (Max)
To reference a lecture, please include the lecture number and date. Example: (Lecture 8)
· To reference an assigned reading, please include the author and page number: Example: (Engels & Marx, 7).
· Minimum of 4 references, including at least one from the lectures. Please note that the minimum of 4 references are for BOTH questions (in total). Also, note that your four references should be from 4 different sources. So, you should avoid quoting different parts of the same reference (a lecture or an assigned reading) to have it count.
· Make sure you properly quote your sources.
· You MUST submit by the deadline, no exceptions.
Due: Friday 9/6/24 by 11:59 PM

Assignment Prompt
Choose only 2 out of 4 questions:
1. Frederick Engels and Karl Marx begin The Communist Manifesto with the following assertion: “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” How do you compare this claim to Hanna Arendt’s argument regarding the historical process of expropriation that began with the Reformation, as discussed in “The Vita Activa and the Modern Age”? Explain why or why not. Also, provide evidence from the text and lecture material in your answers.
2. Compare and contrast Ernst Kapp’s philosophical depiction of the locomotive and electromagnetic telegraph technologies and Martin Heidegger’s depiction of hydroelectric plant built into the Rhine River? Do they agree or differ in their understanding of technology? Also, provide evidence from the text and lecture material in your answers.
3. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) we encounter a conundrum about the human condition in ways modern technoscience transgresses the limits of human nature by creating a monster. Do you think Shoshana Zuboff’s critique of surveillance capitalism is comparable to Shelly’s morality tale of technological transgression? Explain why or why not. Also, provide evidence from the text and lecture material in your answers.
4. Compare and contrast Donna J. Haraway’s “Simians, Cyborgs, and Women: The Reinvention of Nature” with Shoshana Zuboff’s “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Flight for a Human.” Finally, which of the two conceptions of modern technology do you agree with?
3FINALLLLLL!.For the final you will be asked to expand on your midterm essay. You will be presented with expanded versions of the original midterm prompts and be expected to build off of your original midterm paper. Think of this as a part 2, asking you to expand on what you have already written. You will need to include at least an additional TWO readings from weeks 4-5 and an additional outside source for a total of 4 readings and 2 outside sources. You must still rely on a real life example to ground and develop your argument. You may use the same real life example but it must be engaged with accordingly to be responding to the expanded prompt and the new readings (I.E. Do not just copy and past from midterm). It will be crucial to respond to the comments made by your TA on your midterm. This essay should be between 2000 and 2100 words.
· Continuing your discussion of hegemonic power and intellectual property law, choose a business in the creative industry to further elaborate. (The example chosen cannot be EA Games). Explain how the business exemplifies qualities of cognitive capitalism and demonstrates qualities of hegemonic power. What is your relationship to this business as a consumer? Conclude by discussing what role this business plays culturally and why is it important that we engage with it more critically. The final should demonstrate a strong understanding of hegemonic power, the results of Intellectual Property law, and an ability to apply those concepts to a real world example.
· Draw upon your prior discussion regarding the tension between media as a source of profit versus a public good. Pulling from a real world example, situate surveillance / platform capitalism within this tension: How might these firms fulfill a public good versus focus on the market model. Be sure to explain the ways in which platforms and surveillance represent a new form of capitalism, the relationship between platforms and space-time compression, and the impact platforms can have upon the greater public. Conclude by suggesting ways in which platform firms could be more aligned with the public good and the feasibility of your solution.
