1) According to the CST 101 video, why does work have dignity, and what rights and responsibilities do workers have?
According to the CST video 101, the term dignity of work comes from creation, which God has created. God intended for us and trusted us to continue his work because work is God’s gift to all of us. We can take these mental, spiritual, and physical gifts and use them in a way where we can improve and make the world a better place for everyone. It is important to remember that everyone was created in God’s imagination so each person also inherited this dignity. Work exists for people, so recognizing the rights and responsibilities of workers is one of the ways that we can honor the dignity of people. Workers have the right to dignify work, but it is important to make time for leisure and rest, and to take time off when necessary. Catholic teaching also emphasizes that workers have responsibilities, such as providing a fair day’s work and making a wage. There are also situations where individuals are unemployed, but it is possible to get back on their feet with the help of the church. Churches can provide people with the opportunity to find a job that has meaning and will create a harmony that really shows the dignity of work. It is also important to keep in mind all the workers that produce our goods, because there are a lot of workers involved and it is a whole process.

According to the Handbook, the global economy has increased a lot in terms of independence. In regards to globalization, it can be looked upon as a process that started off not having a huge importance in economic relations. According to page 81 and pars 203 “globalization is an encouraging process for the international community, offering hope for a brighter and more sustainable economic future, but it also raises concern. The hope comes from the development and improvement of the material and cultural conditions of life on a global scale”. These specific concerns arise from exploiting the poor, equally, and loss of cultural identity. It is important for individuals to keep in mind that unity amongst everyone is equally important. The church also has views about capitalism and this idea stemmed from John Paul II because he was the one that brought up the idea about whether or not countries should adopt capitalism. According to page 216 and pars. 216 of the Handbook “If by capitalism is meant an economic system which recognizes the fundamental and positive role of business, the market, private property and the resulting responsibility for the means of production, as well as free human creativity in the economic sector, then the answer is certainly in the affirmative”. There is another point of view expressed that reveals capitalism being seen as a system of freedom is not restricted to a juridical framework because it would be seen as freedom which at a core can be ethical and religious. This point of view and reply can be seen as negative to some so this is the reason why capitalism was questioned.

The free market has shown to have many benefits and guarantees many effective results with production of goods and providing services. The free market is also said to be the most efficient way to utilize resources, meet needs, secure advantages, give central place to a person’s desires, meet the desires of other people, facilitate the exchange of products, regulate the inner workings of the economic system, and becomes a service to common good and integral human development. The State plays an important role in expressing feelings about bodies participating in economic activity. The principle of subsidiary also contributes because there should be a free exercise of economic activity. The state’s intervention in the economic environment should meet societies real needs and should be neither abusive or invasive. According to pars. 351 of the CDSC “The State has a duty to sustain business activities by creating conditions which will ensure job opportunities, by stimulating those activities where they are lacking or by supporting them in moments of crisis. The State has the further right to intervene when particular monopolies create delays or obstacles to development. In addition to the tasks of harmonizing and guiding development”. The State can encourage citizens and businesses to promote common good by enforcing economic policies that foster participation between all citizens in regards to activities in production.
