Primary Document Analysis Due: Wednesday, September 20, at 11:59pm Papers will be submitted as PDFs to the Primary Document Analysis module on Brightspace • • • • • Papers should be 2-3 double spaced pages. Write in clear, well-organized paragraphs. Papers should respond to all parts of the prompt (be sure to answer all questions below!) You may utilize no more than two quotations from the primary source. Quotations may be no more than one sentence each. Quotations must be cited using Chicago-Style footnotes (directions here).1 You may not utilize other sources for this paper. You will write your paper based on George Percy’s “Discourse of the plantation of the Southern Colony of Virginia by the English, 1606” In 2-3 pages, answer the following questions in cohesive paragraph form (that is, all questions should be answered in the course of writing your paragraphs). 1. Who is our author and why did they write this? o What is the author hoping to achieve in this document? o What background, expertise, or evidence did they utilize to write this document? o What biases might they have, and how might they affect the information the author is conveying in this document? 2. What is the author saying? a. What are they telling their indented audience? b. What tone or emotions are they conveying? c. Does the author’s tone help them get their point across? How? 3. Why is this document significant? a. Why does this speech matter to American history? b. What does this speech tell us about 17th Century North America? Your paper should be clearly organized. The following is a recommended organization: • Paragraph 1: introduction o Broadly introduces the document o Offers a thesis which your body paragraphs will support ▪ The easiest way to craft a thesis is around question 3: why is this document significant. o Offers a brief road map of how the rest of the paper will support your argument. • Paragraph 2: contextual evidence o Responds to questions about the author and audience 1 To insert footnotes in your writing, utilize the “insert footnote” tool in your word processor (in Microsoft word, it’s under “references.” In Google Docs, it’s under the “insert” tab). • • Body paragraphs o Explain content of the document o Talk about examples of evidence from Percy’s account o Analyze why those speak to your thesis Conclusion o Ties together previous paragraphs o Summarizes your point without introducing new evidence o Restates how the evidence you’ve presented supports your thesis. This paper will be graded on: • Argument o In order to receive a top score on this paper, you must have a clearly stated thesis supported by the rest of the paper • Historical evidence/detail o You must back up your thesis with detailed evidence from the primary source • Analysis o You must clearly analyze evidence: demonstrate how it supports your thesis • Organization and writing o Writing should be logically organized, clear, and free from spelling and grammar errors • Response to prompt o Your paper must follow the directions laid out on this assignment sheet and clearly respond to all parts of the prompt All writing in this and all assignments for this course is expected to be YOUR ORIGINAL WRITING.
