Unit 1 – Assignment – Eating Out Purpose Currently, it seems as if everyone eats out now and then whether it’s due to hectic schedules or socializing. There are also more choices than ever. It’s important to be able to locate information on and evaluate your food choices. The purpose of this assignment is to be able to find, read, and evaluate nutritional information from restaurants as well as to see the difference between the ways people perceive nutrition versus actual nutrition. These skills will help you make better food choices when eating out. Lesson Outcomes • • • • Locate the nutritional information from restaurants. (CLO 1, 2, 3, 7) Read and evaluate the nutritional information from a restaurant. (CLO 1, 2, 3, 7) Compare nutrition of restaurant meals to the daily requirements (CLO 1, 2, 3, 7) Compare your perception of what is nutritious/healthy with actual nutrition information. (CLO 1, 2, 3, 7) Steps to Complete the Task Step 1: Research Background Information 1. Read Chapter #12 on Nutrition Applications. 2. Review the following web sites and videos: Serving Sizes (from Food Labels assignment) • WebMD Portion Size Guide • Serving Size and Portion Size (3:10) • How drastically food portions have changed in the past 20 years (1:44) Fast Food Information • Fast Food Business – Shocking Truth Behind It (2:14) • Worst Fast Food Items You Can Order (7:14) • This is your body on fast food • The Effects of Fast Food on the Body Step 2: Analyze and Evaluate As you reflect on the information you’ve just reviewed. Consider the following: 1. How have portion sizes changed? How has the change affected Americans in general? 2. Why do so many people eat out instead of preparing their own meals? 3. How does fast food affect a person’s body? 4. Do you eat a lot of fast food? Would you consider preparing more of your own food? 5. How important is it to stay close to the recommended nutrition intake? Step 3: Compare Meals What does all this information mean for you? Answer the questions in the “Eating Out” worksheet. 1. Click the link above and save the worksheet on your computer. 2. Complete each of the blanks on the tables. 3. Be sure to respond to each question completely. Don’t just list information, explain it. Use the questions in Step 2: Analyze and Evaluate to guide your responses. 4. Typically, you will need 2-3 sentences (50-75 words) to fully answer a question. Submitting the Assignment 1.
