For this assignment, I’d like you to think about a boss you have had (or currently have). (NOTE: If you really can’t think of a boss to use for this assignment, you could substitute a teacher or just make something up.)
Would you say they are a good boss or a bad boss? Tell me some things about them that make them either bad or good as a boss. Now, using the vocabulary from this chapter, tell me how an industrial-organizational psychologist would describe this boss.
For example, what kind of power do they wield? What specific traits or characteristics do they have that make them a good or bad leader? Which leadership theory best explains the way they lead? Be specific and thorough. This assignment should be at least a page in length. Be precise in your use of the language you learned in this chapter so I can see that you really understand the concepts. This chapter is all about motivation. I/O Psychologists try to understand what motivates people to work hard and how we can get people with lower internal motivation to increase their motivation to work hard. Sometimes we may feel like we are in constant pursuit of “being happy” with our jobs. That is, we are motivated to keep going in our jobs (do better, do more, get a promotion or raise, etc.) because we think that will bring us more happiness. But maybe we are looking at the relationship between motivation and happiness all wrong. For this paper, I would like you to watch the following TED talk and answer the questions below in essay format.

Please address the following questions. What is Shawn Achor’s central message regarding why we shouldn’t equate “being happy” with “success” in our jobs? That is, what’s wrong with thinking “when I reach a certain goal in my job, I will be happy”? Be sure to refer to 3 concepts you learned about in the chapter as you answer this question.
