Cell Structure and Function
Background:
Cells are the basic structural unit of life. The cell theory states that all organisms are composed
of cells and that cells come only from other cells. All living cells can be classified into either
prokaryotes or eukaryotes. The main difference between them is that prokaryotes do not have
nuclei, while eukaryotes contain nuclei and other membrane-bound organelles. Bacteria and
archaea are prokaryotes. All other organisms are eukaryotes, including animals and plants.
In this lab, students will learn about the organelles found in animal and plant cells, including
nucleus, nucleolus, DNA (chromatin, chromosomes), ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi
body (apparatus), vacuole, lysosome, mitochondria, cytoskeleton, chloroplasts, cell walls, cell
membrane, cilia, flagella, etc.
