As it relates to Alma Faulkenberger an 85- year old female who is scheduled to have an invasive pelvic procedure, as the health care professional our responsibilities are to provide safe, patient-centered, high quality patient care. As stated by Falvo (2011) Patient-centered approach has shown an increase in patient satisfaction and better health outcomes. The plan that I would initiate for Alma’s compliance with the procedure and post -treatment would include: Approaching patient in a calm and respectful manner introducing myself to the patient providing my name and title. Then identify the patient using first and last name followed by date of birth. Apologize to Alma on the mispronunciation of her name by the colleague. Ensure informed consent was obtained and correct surgery site is marked . Communicate in a clear and concise manner. Provide written and verbal teaching of procedure pre-op and post-op to Alma in simple wording. Explain the importance of medication compliance and pre-op and post-op instructions. Ensure patient is able to read back or summarize information for understanding. After the procedure ensure patient is safe for discharge home with the appropriate instructions and if needed assistance from the facility to home. Provide follow up information and a number to reach the office if any questions or concerns arise. Provide steps to follow if an emergency arise. Schedule a follow up appointment. In Alma’s case patient teaching is important mainly due to her age and level of understanding. A collaboration with other members of her care team is need to provide quality care (Arema et al., 2022).

Developing rapport and a trusting relationship with a patient is important in having the patient be compliant with their care and procedure. Nurses have a lot of influence over the ability to get patients to comply with medical care. In order to build that trusting relationship nurses need to educate patient on not just the “what” but also the “why” to facilitate compliance. This is where the compliance based approach is flawed in the sense that it states that because nurses are a medical professional, patients will comply accordingly (Rothenberg, 2003). There are many factors that are playing into this interaction. For one, Alma is awaiting an invasive pelvic procedure and could be feeling many anxieties about the procedure. It’s important as a nurse to not taking the interaction personally. I would initially apologize to Alma and ask her what her full name is to see if I’ve either had the wrong name, she goes by another name, or mispronounced her name. For patient education I would assess the patient’s understanding and how much she’s willing to learn. Just like assessing body systems as the first approach, it’s important to assess the baseline for patient learning. This can help nurses meet patients where they are at. Providing patients with factual and detailed information that is also unbiased, while also acknowledging concerns and stresses is the best approach in this situation to increase adherence (Falv
COMMENT 3:Upon approaching Alma, I would apologize to her for mispronouncing her name and for shouting in her ear. I would then ensure her that I will pronounce her name correctly from here on out. I would then place myself at her level and make sure I make eye contact with her and introduce myself. Next, I would inform Alma about my title and role in her healthcare for her pelvic procedure. By ensuring Alma that I can be a valuable point of reference for her care, I can make a positive effort to re-establish trust with Alma so that she may become more compliant in allowing herself to be cared for and to follow medical advice after her procedure. In helping to re-direct Alma’s behavior and nonadherence, the nurse can help prevent the development of further debilitating chronic conditions (Falvo, 2011).
The approach I would take to provide Alma patient education in this case is to have her tell me what she knows of having a pelvic procedure. This would help to discover if she has an accurate understanding of what will be taking place. An explanation would be provided to Alma informing her of what will take place leading up to the procedure, what will happen during the procedure, and what kind of follow-up care she will receive afterwards. I would then inform Alma of what kind of pain medication she will be having for pain so that she will remain comfortable and has pain-free as possible. In addition to providing education on pain medication, Alma would be educated on the importance of when to ask for pain medication so that she can have adequate pain control. Furthermore, by allowing Alma to have control over deciding on when to ask for pain medication for herself helps to reinforce age-specific health care education and autonomy (Grand Canyon University, n.d.).

How would I use collaboration to assist in compliance with patient’s like Alma:
“Health professionals may work together as a team to help the individual patient gain knowledge and/or skill in order to manage his or her condition and treatment” (GCU 2024). I believe it’s important to understand Alma’s situation. In the example given, it says she is sitting in the waiting room, but it doesn’t give any other information on whether or not she is alone or with her family. As an individual health care professional, it would be hard to know all about her, but by collaborating with other members of her medical team, I can gain a better insight to her views, goals, and ideals when it comes to her health. As Villar points out, collaboration and patient adherence to treatment plans are important for the success of any healthcare plan, and can ensure the best possible outcome for her (2022). Ensuring patient compliance and adherence to the treatment plan the primary goal, so that Alma can get the best care and focus on her health promotion. Once the team is on board, the consistency in her care will be evident to each person treating her. Alma will also be understand that all are working together for her benefits and that would ultimately encourage more compliance. This would also help me as a provider to understand her social determinants of health, beliefs, and identify the best way to make sure she feels heard, respected and in control of her healthcare.
COMMENT 5:
Inter-professional collaboration is essential in all aspects of patient care whether the patient is difficult or not. Utilizing all disciplines when caring for an individual is vital for better patient outcomes and can boost morale when the team works together. As healthcare delivery becomes more interconnected, coordination between nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, and other disciplines is vital to improving workplaces, health systems and patient care (jnj, 2023). Communication is vital within the interdisciplinary team to assist in patients care and compliance from the patient. Collaboration can also include Alma’s family, having them involved and understanding of the medical procedures and what to expect afterwards. Family members can be another set of ears for Alma and can help with her transition home, if need be, by reminding her about medications, follow up appointments, and any other important details afterwards. Health care communication within the team is essential because information about the patient is shared amongst the team and important information could be missed if the team does not work together for the patient. When health professionals work together as a team through communication and collaboration between team members, the patient receives a coordinated teaching effort from the team (GCU, 2024). By incorporating all team members, Alma can know that she is getting the best care possible and be more compliant with the transition afterwards.
COMMENT 6:
Interprofessional collaboration can help improve the flow of patient care, preventing frustrations and delays. The healthcare professional can talk to the healthcare team, including the preop and postop nurses, about the patient’s frustrations and ensure they know how to handle the situation.
The health care professional can conduct a small interview with the patient to learn her history, references, how she would like to be cared for, and whether there are any health or religious beliefs the health care team should be aware of (Alharbi et al., 2022).
After the quick interview, the health care professional can relay the information to the health care team, helping them know about the situation, understand the patient’s references, and learn the practices. This collaboration can help improve the care team’s workflow while satisfying Alma’s needs. When the healthcare team satisfies her needs, trust will be built between her and the team. She will be more willing and motivated to listen and attend to the education about her treatments after the procedure. Building trust is the key for patients to continue to comply with their health treatments, motivating them to learn about health promotion. Alma can be a difficult patient, but if the healthcare team can build trust with her, she will be willing to learn and comply with her medical treatments (Mohammed Alhussin et al., 2024).
