You will write a short paper that links topics from class about infant learning and development to the experiences of the infants in the movie (Bayar from Mongolia, Ponijao from Namibia, Mari from Japan, and Hattie from California).
Please be sure to avoid making value judgments in drawing comparisons — there is no “right way” or “best way” for infants to develop. Be aware that the infants in the movie are not representative of entire cultures (for example, think about the wide range of different experiences for infants growing up in California), but serve as a useful example for thinking about the ways in which infants’ experiences may be similar or different across cultures.
Assignment details
There are a lot of things that we can observe about the infants’ experiences: their physical environments, opportunities for movement and exploration, access to objects, social interactions, experiences hearing language, presence of cultural tools (books, electronics), daily routines (meals, bathing, errands), play activities, and caregivers’ attempts to teach them new skills and abilities. Pick one or two of these aspects to focus on in your paper. Avoid discussing larger sociological differences (e.g., governmental, economic, etc.) that are less directly tied to infants’ daily experiences and development. Focus on what you can observe.
In the first part of your paper ( 1 ½ pages), describe similarities and differences between the four infants for 1-2 types of experiences you chose to examine. What experiences are consistent, and which vary? Be specific. Saying “infants hear different language” is of course true. But what’s different about it (the frequency, the people speaking, the tone, etc.). Cite specific examples from what you watched in the movie.
In the second part of your paper (to 1 1/2 pages), link the experiences you observed to a topic about infant development that we will discuss later in the class. In the class, we will cover memory, learning, perception, motor development, representation, symbols, understanding of numbers, object cognition, social cognition, social communication, and language. How might the experiences you observed lead to a phenomenon developing similarly/differently for infants in the different cultures? For example, how might the phenomenon develop more slowly/quickly? It is OK to speculate here—the idea is for you to put yourself in the shoes of a developmental psychologist. Try to imagine what the process is for learning to walk, to talk, or to know a ball is a “ball”. Connect the development of a phenomenon to the types of experiences you observed in the movie.
Format and length of the paper
Your paper should be written in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins (top, bottom, left, and right). Your lines should be double-spaced; do not put extra spaces between paragraphs. The entire paper should be about 2 full pages of text. There is no need to include a title page or title for the paper. Put your name as a heading in the margin.
