ccess discrimination occurs when someone is denied employment due to their race, sex, age, or other qualities unrelated to productivity.
Access discrimination occurs when someone is denied employment due to their race, sex, age, or other qualities unrelated to productivity. An example of access discrimination is placing judgment over someone based on a stereotype or skin color. On the other hand, treatment discrimination occurs when employees are treated differently than other employees based on personal characteristics, resulting in them receiving fewer job-related benefits and or resources (Bell & Leopold, 2021). An example of treatment discrimination is discrimination based on religious views, age discrimination, or discrimination against someone with a disability, to name a few.
Preference for Hispanics over African Americans
Discouragement and complete disengagement from the labor force can result from the demoralizing effects of ongoing unemployment and underemployment brought on by various forms of access discrimination, which can have detrimental effects on the person, the organization, and society which is seen within the workforce statistics (Bell & Leopold, 2021). African American women are frequently considered unwilling to work, preferring to draw welfare to support their many children. African Americans often experience access discrimination because their names sound black (Bell & Leopold, 2021). According to a study using well-matched applicants, Marianne Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan (University of Chicago and MIT, respectively) discovered that applicants with names that are popular among Black people, such as LaKisha and Jamal, were 50% less likely to be called for interviews than applicants with names that are popular among White people, such as Emily and Greg (Bell & Leopold, 2021). Even though African Americans and Hispanics occasionally face discrimination and are both non-dominant groups, this fosters animosity between the two minority groups in the United States. This may be because there is a misconception that African Americans are not as hard workers as Latinos or Hispanics. Employers may be more inclined to hire Hispanics or immigrant workers over African Americans because immigrants fear deportation and are more susceptible to exploitation.
