Getting Started with Outlining:
Essay #2 Communication: Exploring How We Use It and How It’s Evolving
Thinking about Essay Structure
INTRODUCTIONS:
Remember that introductions generally have three components
1. General Information
How might you start your essay?
2. Introduce the text on which you are focusing
For this essay, your main focus is on Deborah Tannen’s book
3. Thesis!
A thesis is the answer to a question(s), so think of your thesis as the answer to the following question: Of the section of Tannen’s book on which you focused, how affected is the validity of her communication concepts by our increasing use of technology, and what do your findings suggest about the future of our ability to communicate as a culture? PARAGRAPH ORGANIZATION:
**This “¶” is the symbol for a paragraph.
Possible Essay Outline Structure (Only a sample. You may choose to vary your own structure a bit to fit your needs)
¶ 1 -Essay Introduction
¶2- Introduce the Chapter within Tannen’s book on which you are focusing. Explain in a general way the concepts this chapter discusses. Looking at the introduction section of the chapter may give you some guidance and possible quotes from Tannen.
¶ 3- Take a closer look at one or two of the specific concepts within the chapter. Depending on what point you are trying to prove about whether these concepts are still realistic or not because of our use of technology, you could choose to incorporate quotes from Tannen and/or one of the other articles.
¶4- Same as the above paragraph—explore some of her specific concepts more closely, revealing if they will remain the same or not…
¶5- At this point you could turn your focus to some of the ways in which communication has changed through technology if that is the position you are taking. This could be a good opportunity to focus on quotes from the articles on technology.
¶6- You may want to have another paragraph here where you really tackle the last part of your thesis—what is the future of communication as far as you can tell? Is it mostly a positive picture, or is it bleak? Somewhere in between? Quotes from Tannen and or the articles could be useful here.
¶ 7- Conclusion of essay
DON’T FORGET THE PRINCIPLES OF THE TEA PARAGRAPH.
Topic (Topic Sentence) – What is the specific point you are trying to prove with this paragraph?
Evidence- What is a quote that proves and illustrates your point? Make sure to introduce quotes before you include them.
Analysis- How does this quote or example help to prove the point? Discuss it and show that you are using your critical thinking skills—include your opinion on the topic!
When you choose to have more than one quote in your paragraph, don’t fret, just use TEaEA instead of regular TEA! Click here for more examples of paragraphs for this essay!
