An individual’s political socialization is a process that begins when they are very young and evolves with age and life experience. In Chapter 6, the textbook expands on who influences our political ideology, or, in other words, how we see government ideally serving its role in our lives.
Primary agents of socialization include family, school and religion.
Over time political ideology continues to develop with additional (secondary) influencers such as peers, jobs, media channels, geographic location, social organizations, community leaders and major events. People have numerous influencers in life and many with varying political viewpoints. The textbook states, “Research indicates that many individuals are unwilling to deviate too far politically from what their peers think.” Do you agree, or disagree?
