What are some physical, cognitive, and emotional factors that can affect middle adulthood?
What can a caretaker do to help alleviate some of the stressors? Think of community supports that are put in place
RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING BELOW 100 WORDS EACH
1. Some physical factors that can affect middle adulthood would be changes in vision, hearing, weight changes, and even joint pain. Middle adulthood doesn’t seem to be “old”, but those are major physical factors that are affected by aging. Cognitive factors that are affected would be memory, and how we learn things. As we age, the less we remember things that recently happened (short term memory), and the older we get, we start to forget things that were stored in our long term memory. Emotional factors that are affected are our temper. The older people get, it seems that their temper has lessened. They’re more calm in reacting and in conversations or arguments and negotiations. A caretaker can help alleviate some of these frustrations by working with the person. For example, if you notice someone isn’t remembering things as well as they used to, don’t constantly ask them “don’t you remember that?”, or something along those lines. It just makes the person feel worse than they already do. As far as cognitive goes, caretakers can get the adult enrolled in groups that help stimulate the brain and help the brain work to continue to be productive. The more we work our brain the better. Caretakers should look into classes or groups that help stimulate the adult so that they feel good about themselves and less bad about everything. Being social is huge for this group!
2.Middle adulthood is the 40-65 age range and during this period of life, there are many changes that can affect someone at this point in their lives. Most people at this age will have children who have most likely left the house to go to college or join the military or doing something else with their lives and so because of this, many people at this age are becoming empty nesters. At this age, people are also approaching retirement and finishing up a career. Having children and working a job can both be things that provide a sense of identity or fulfillment to someone or it could be a huge sense of burden so the removal of these two factors can have a major effect on someone’s mood and emotional state. Also considering that this is a time when many women start approaching menopause and this is a huge shift in hormones so it is not a huge shock if it creates a huge change as well. A caretaker can help alleviate some of these stressor by providing resources for therapy or groups that could help someone deal with the emotional factors and physical changes since there are so many at this age.
