Behavior modification most often is the result of operant conditioning in which a combination of reinforcement and punishment are used to decrease the presence of an unwanted behavior and to replace that behavior with a new desired behavior.
Behavior modification most often is the result of operant conditioning in which a combination of reinforcement and punishment are used to decrease the presence of an unwanted behavior and to replace that behavior with a new desired behavior.
After reading the chapters on reinforcement and punishment create a behavior modification strategy to apply to one of the following scenarios. Remember – as part of this plan you must discuss how you will eliminate the negative behavior and then encourage the development of a new positive behavior.
Your 4 year-old son throws himself on the ground screaming every time he does not get his way.
Your 10 and 12 year-old daughters have been fighting with each other and are starting to get out of hand.
You are a 4th grade teacher who is dealing with a student who is very fidgety and talkative during class when you are trying to teach.
Your 16 year-old has now missed curfew on three different occasions without calling or providing a good explanation as to why.
part 2 Responded to two peers

I would try to acknowledge the child’s needs first. I would assume they are having a temper tantrum because they are wanting something. Like the text book said sometimes we have to use contrived reinforcers (Chance & Furlong, 2023). Once I figure that out my next step would be to explain why having a temper tantrum is not ok to get what you want.
I would first find out why they are fighting and try to come up with a solution. If that does not work, I would use punishment as a means to reinforce them not fighting. Children tend to not want to get in trouble, but when necessary a time out can make all the difference. It lessen the amount of time they do fight and help them be more appreciative of each other. When my sister and I were younger, my dad used to make us sit in the room face to face until we got along. It really worked because we started having more fun than fights.
I would use reward reinforcers. If I offer a reward for good behavior, most 4th graders will be more prone to listen. This will also help the other students remain focused so they are not missing out on their work. Also offering a reward gives the student a learning opportunity on self control. It makes them correct themselves and influence others around them to do the same. Like the saying goes monkey see monkey do.
I would ground them for at least a month. I would take away all electronic devices and cut them off from social activities. I would also monitor where they go after school. Once they are done with their time for punishment, I would see if they realize their error. If they have, they would be free to get everything back. If not another two weeks and I will explain why they are being punished.

Peer2 According to Chance and Furlong (2023), the term reinforcement is when there is an increase of strength in a behavior because of the consequence they received. Also, according to Chance and Furlong (2023), the term punishment is when there is a decrease of strength in a behavior because of the consequence they received. Both reinforcement and punishment are alike and different at the same time. Also, they both can make a positive or a negative impact on the subject in the receiving end of it. When the word punishment is brought up it can have a negative response to it because this world has attached negativity to punishment. This reading has made it clear that society should not “judge a book by its cover”, because there is more to everything. If I had a 16-year-old who was not following the rules of coming home at a specific time and they have broken the rules three times, then my husband and I would have to act. We would have to force our child to practice the negative reinforcement, which according to Chance and Furlong (2023), it is the removal of an undesirable outcome. We could find ways to make her/him want to come home when they are supposed to. We could place a tracker in their phone/car, and we could go out to look for them to bring them home. That would embarrass them, and they would want to get out of that type of situation. The only way we would not do that is by them coming home when they are supposed to. We would also practice negative punishment, which according to Chance and Furlong (2023), it is removing the thing that the person wants. We would start removing every item that is in their possession and will not give it back until things change for the better. We would make sure to sit down with them and let them know of the importance of following the rules at home which is practice for following the rules out in the world. Also, we would emphasize on how important it is for them to come home early because it has to do with their physical safety and our mental/emotional health.WC: 369ReferenceChance, P., & Furlong, E. PART 3 Behavior Modification Project – Part IIBased on feedback from week 1 in a 2-3 page paper:
Discuss the triggers or antecedents that set off the current behavior (in the given example – boredom, stress).
Describe the current baseline levels of the behavior (1 pack a day) that will be used to measure the outcome of the behavior modification plan.
Next discuss the desired behavior or outcome you wish to achieve.
Finally in detail discuss the strategy that you plan to employ to modify this behavior ensuring that it is based on operant conditioning principles and techniques. Make sure to include the reinforcers you will apply when milestones are reached and the punishment that will take place when you or your subject stray from the plan.
