·Write in academic, third person, objective voice.
·Articulate in formal diction without conversational language or slang.
·Format according to MLA conventions, with submission information, header pagination, in-text citations, and a Works Cited page.
Instructions:
1.Read, annotate, and review the following sections of the Norton Field Guide:
·Chapter 13 “Arguing a Position”
·Chapter 29 “Generating Ideas and Text”
·Chapter 38 “Arguing”
·Chapters 30 through 33 which address preparing a final draft
·Chapters 47 through 54 which address research and format
2.Choose the essay’s focus and your argumentative stance:
The topic of the essay must pertain to your major or field of interest or one chosen from among the themes outlined in the “Thematic Guide to the Readings” section of The Norton Field Guide (pp. xli-xlix). Use class notes, instructor feedback, and textbook readings to assist you. Ask questions!
3.Conduct research. Use class notes and chapters 49-52 in the Norton Field Guide to evaluate your sources and to make sure they meet assignment requirements. You may consult with a Locke Library librarian for help with evaluating sources. Synthesize what you have discovered by critically reading and annotating your sources to find connections between/among the source writers’ ideas and your own.
4.Complete a rough draft and submit to the assignment link in Moodle for evaluation.
5.Use the comments and edits on the returned rough draft, as well as any received from Writing Center tutors, to complete a final draft (the final exam grade for this course).
6.Submit your final draft in a Word or .rtf document to the assignment link in Moodle.
Assessments: This essay will be evaluated according to departmental standards:
·Minimum of one rough draft evaluated by instructor
·Other kinds of assessment as required by instructor
