In addition to Johan Sebastian Bach, George Frederik Handel and Antonio Vivaldi, there were hundreds of other composers who were active during the Baroque period. A Wikipedia listing of Baroque composers lists over 800 names.

65 of these composers whose names are widely known today are listed below.

The 9 names in bold are considered especially significant (for various reasons.)

Assignment:

• Select a composer from the list below.
• Do an Internet search on the composer’s name and read information on the composer from at least two sources. (Wikipedia is acceptable as one source.)
• Do a similar search on YouTube for video recordings or performances of the composer’s music. Listen to 3 different short musical works (or movements of complete works). Be prepared to briefly describe each selection in writing, according to the form provided below.
• Note: if one or more of the works you select is a complete performance of an opera, then listen to several different sections of the complete opera.
• Fill out the Report Form. Copy and paste the form into a Word Document, complete the form, then upload it to the LMS as a file upload

6. Based on the reading you did on this composer, list some important facts about his/her life or musical career.

7. List the complete name (including any opus or catalog number) of the 3 musical selections you listened to and briefly describe them. Do not quote facts you read about the composer or his/her music, but instead provide a short description in your own words of the music you listened to.

Underline all musical vocabulary. All descriptions must be in your own words, based on your listening and comprehension of the vocabulary terms.

This assignment must be typed and submitted electronically in MS Word (.docx or .pdf) format. The file must be named in the following format: Lastname_Assignment2. Submit your completed document to Assignment 2, listed on the Modules and Assignments pages, as a file attachment.

1. Who are the greatest composers? Do a Google or other Internet search on the words “greatest composers.” Read through at least five of the top ten results and take note of the names of the composers cited. (Only use results from websites that list the names of classical composers, not songwriters. Also, only include results from sources that list the names of the composers in some type of ranking, rather than an alphabetical listing.) Then, based on your findings, post the names of the composers you found to have been most often cited as the top three greatest composers.
2. Write a commentary about one of your three search results and why you think this composer belongs on the list of history’s greatest composers.
3. Listen to and describe a particular musical work by your chosen composer. Include a link to the work. Be sure to use the musical vocabulary you learned in Module 1! You may need to review this.
4. Include links to each of the five websites you selected.
