Social media leading adolescents to have in person comunication issues (two examples on files)
introduction Outline – need one page of references – introduction 2 pages
1. The first sentence can be an engaging and appropriate statistic (e.g., 35% of
American adults age 18-34 have played a video game in the last week [citation]),
a question (e.g., Has social media become the primary way that young adults
communicate with one another?) or, a general statement about the problem area
(e.g., Among the outcomes associated with violent video game play, guilt has
emerged as a variable that has recently received considerable attention (e.g.,
Hartmann, Toz & Brandon, 2010; Krcmar & Cingel, 2016).
2. The first paragraph should include the specific problem area you will be
investigating.
3. As soon as possible, indicate (support with evidence) that the problem you are
investigating is important.
4. Provide brief definitions of key terms that you will be using; those brief
explanations may be expanded on later in the paper.
5. Provide a brief overview of important and relevant findings in the literature. Do
not go into detail about these findings; that happens in the lit review/rationale.
6. Mention any possible implications of your findings. Note to self: If there aren’t
any, should you be doing it?
7. Provide a brief overview of your method (e.g., Therefore, in this study, I will
conduct a questionnaire that measures…..)
IMPORTANT NOTES:
I used to think I should not have to say this, but I have learned: better safe than
sorry…..so…
1. Make sure you have a main thesis sentence for the introduction. If you are not
sure about this, meet with me first.
2. Make sure that each paragraph has a main thesis sentence.
3. Everything in that paragraph (and all paragraphs) should relate to that thesis
sentence.
4. Good social science writing is clear, direct, has many citations but few quotes,
and relies on empirical evidence. Again, if you are not sure what I mean, let’s
talk.
5. A clearly written and well organized intro should stand the “first sentence”
method. What is this? Basically, someone other than you should be able to read
the first sentence of each paragraph and have a decent understanding of your
ideas. They’ll miss all the details reading that way, but they should still be able to
get a sense of what you mean. Please do this yourself, or ideally, have someone
else do it for you.
6. If you struggle with transitions (in writing…..I can’t help you at the moment with
other kinds ), use the “anchor word” method. What is this? When moving from
one paragraph to the other, if you are unsure of how to get there—that is,
transition—then look for a key word in the last couple of sentences, and use it
again in the first sentence of the next paragraph. You do not have to do this every
time, but it does help when you are struggling. (e.g., “Therefore, moral reasoning
does have an effect on political candidate choice, particularly for those who
identify as Independents”…..Next paragraph: “Despite the impact of moral
reasoning, exposure to campaign ads is also known to influence candidate choice.
