Project 1: Single Source Rhetorical Analysis
https://canopycanopycanopy.com/contents/high-
PROJECT: In 2017, Juan Caloca, an artist and activist from Mexico City, created a video game called High Treason, a digital project produced by Triple Canopy within their online digital magazine.
Working with programmer Emilio Peláez, Caloca’s High Treason places players in the National Palace of Mexico. Players navigate the palace home, from the offices of the president to the federal treasury, as well as state archives. Players shuffle between subterranean dungeons – galleries, of sorts – with images and objects that undermine (and in many instances deface or desecrate) Mexico’s most sacred symbols – or, at least, their manipulation by the government.
ARGUMENT: Caloca’s game offers a response to what he deems as unhealthy nationalism, highlighting how rules for Mexican symbols enforce false notions of nationalism and encourage fear and xenophobia.
TASK: For this project, given the historical and cultural implications of the game, analyze the rhetorical claims made by the textual and visual evidence presented in Caloca’s game. Cite specific examples of visual or textual rhetorical argument.
Offer an introduction that outlines Caloca’s Project (1-2 paragraphs) and Argument (1-2 paragraphs). Then analyze 1-3 Claims (1-2 paragraphs per claim) from the text, with Evidence (1 direct example for each claim), and Strategy analysis (at least 1 strategy per claim).
Structure
Do not indent. Offer a left-justified, bold heading (like above) for each section: PROJECT, ARGUMENT, CLAIM #1, CLAIM #2, CLAIM #3 to begin each paragraph.
Correct MLA format for heading with header with last name/page #. Offer at least 1.3 spacing or double-space and type the assignment. Length: 3-6 pages. MLA Works Cited also required on its own page for Caloca’s text.
Attempt to locate and analyze the following components: Project, Argument, Claims (1-3), Evidence (1-3), Strategies (1-3).
Choose to analyze between 1-3 claims:
For each claim analysis, choose a piece of evidence (example) to highlight and address how Caloca uses rhetorical a rhetorical strategy to support his positions.
