As you review the cases, you will notice that each of the individuals featured in the cases is engaging in substance use and misuse. It may not be quite as obvious, but if you review the cases carefully you may also notice that these individuals are also experiencing some mental health struggles. Co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health disorders are very common and clients with co-occurring disorders may struggle to obtain effective treatment that fully addresses all needs (SAMHSA, 2020). Although the direction of causality between substance use disorders and mental health disorders is somewhat blurry, it is clear that mental health disorders and substance use disorders can influence one another and that the presence of co-occurring disorders may complicate the treatment process.
