Student Example (NON-504/IEP) Ms.Ramos English 9 B Research Paper Fashion Phenomena How do social phenomena affect fashion, and why does it matter? Well, there are both positive and negative effects. That includes expression, confidence, exploitation, and stealing. To answer further, we need to ask three important questions. What makes certain clothes popular, why is style so important to society, and how does the pace in fashion trends play a role? There are many different ways for clothing to gain attention. Usually, it involves observing what other people wear around you. “Fashion trends now start and evolve through five key ways: from the runway, from street style, through celebrities, through fashion bloggers, and through the different fashion capitals of the world” (Cooper). This shows that many brands today use public settings to gain popularity. However, most trends are also influenced by culture. This makes trends vary depending on where you are. We can see evidence of this in the following quote: “The era, beliefs held by the people living in it, and the culture in that era and in that region plays a considerable role in influencing its fashion trends” (“Fibre2Fashion”). A great example of culture influencing fashion are nose rings. They originated in the Middle East during the 1950’s and soon became popular in the United states. It spread to the U.S. by Americans who had visited India (Shero). Culture can easily spread and influence different trends. Everyone values culture significantly, and is considered very important. This brings us to my next subtopic. Why is style so important to society? Well, style counts as a form of expression and individuality. Some people may have a difficult time putting their emotions into words, so they do it through fashion. This can be seen by Katherine Barnes who was asked if she thought fashion was important. She responded by saying “Yes, I do think fashion is important in society because it allows people to express their personality. Throughout the ages fashion has been an important part of society and culture. As the human world developed so did the practice of clothing and what people developed out of different materials to wear.” Style gives others confidence, and makes people stand out. The way you dress can also impact how those around you view you. Formal attire can be seen as elegant, Casual clothes might be considered lazy. Whatever you wear can make or break you, depending on the social setting. There are also other factors that have to do with temperature. Believe it or not, style is also influenced by seasonal changes. As of right now Old Navy, a clothing brand, has a sale on coats. Why is that? It’s because winter is nearing of course. Nobody wants to go outside with a short-sleeve shirt while it’s snowing. Companies show that you can be stylish while adhering to the weather. It would be nice to be able to wear whatever you want when you want right? Well, there might actually be one way. It’s called Fast Fashion. But what exactly is Fast Fashion? “Fast fashion can be defined as cheap, trendy clothing that samples ideas from the catwalk or celebrity culture and turns them into garments in high street stores at breakneck speed to meet consumer demand” (Rauturier). This enables people, mostly teenagers, to attain trendy clothes quickly. However, there are also many downsides to Fast Fashion. The idea is to get popular clothing on the market just to throw them away once the trend goes away. It gives off the idea that following trends is the only way to stay relevant. To make matters worse, It forms both overproduction and pollution (Rauturier). There are mainly three negative impacts of Fast Fashion that no one seems to consider. That includes pollution, plagiarism, and poverty. People use Fast Fashion for instant gratification and less hassle. It is also very cheap, allowing workers to be exploited and paid below minimum wage. Unfortunately, teenagers find this as the best way to get their desired clothing. Another way fast fashion harms society is by stealing clothing ideas. There are many brands that have problems with fast fashion sites due to them making money off of their ideas. Those with low income are not the ones who keep these brands going either. Even though it’s nice for those who don’t have an abundant amount of money, the negative outweighs the good. This is why many people may resort to recycling old clothes, and turning them into brand new pieces. Or, making by hand what they see online. Leading us back to our main question, how do social phenomena affect fashion, and why does it matter? To put it shortly, fashion phenomena influence trends and how we dress. Whether you’re going to the store, posting on social media, or even sitting at home. Different cultures, seasonal changes, and many other aspects all come together to create different and unique styles. This concept matters a lot due to the fact that this is how many people express themselves. We have the ability to show what we feel, rather than putting it into words. Now there are negative impacts that I talked about in the previous paragraph such as pollution, plagiarism, and being underpaid. People are being constantly overworked for low amounts of pay, pollution is on a rampage, and works are stolen very often. Though these things may happen, that should not stop you from dressing how you want as long as it is not harming others. Always research what you buy, and keep styling as much as you want to. Overall, how and why you dress matters differently to each and every one of us. Sources Used -Cooper, Allison. “How do fashion trends start?” Lovetoknow.
