INFOGRAPHIC DATABASE ASSIGNMENT Requirements: • • • All assignments must have a title and your name. The font and size you select should make an effective visual presentation to your audience. All assignments must contain the information detailed in the procedure section of these guidelines. Description: The most common definition of an infographic describes it simply as a visual representation of information and data. By combining elements of text, image, chart, diagram, and, more recently, video, an infographic is an effective tool to present data and explain complex issues in a way that can quickly lead to insight and better understanding. For this assignment, you are describing the features that a certain database has to offer for research versus a similar search engine. Procedure: You will be creating a comparison infographic that will define, compare, and contrast one of the general databases on the Harper library website to a similar general search engine or website. The specific comparisons to choose from are listed below. • Search any topic to help evaluate the databases. For example, if I want to compare one general database with a non-library database, I can choose plastic waste as my search topic. This will provide a focus for my evaluation. • Select an intended audience. Is it a student who is new to Harper and therefore new to the library website? Is it a student who has used library research before? Is it a professor who already knows these databases? Is it a friend? Family member? General audience? This will help to determine the purpose of HOW you present your information. What types of articles are included in each database in reference to your topic? What other types of resources are available on these databases besides articles? What are the similarities and differences between the two databases? For what purpose would you use one of these databases over the other? Describe the ease of use with each database. There are several free infographic generators to choose from. The only quirk is that some of these sites require you to create a login. Some that I recommend include Canva, Venngage, Infogram, and Piktochart. Visual Suggestions: • • • • Pick a layout. Once you’ve picked a layout for your infographic, the next step will be to figure out how to visualize your data. Depending on your data and the goal of your infographic, you may want to change a pre-existing chart in a template to something geared towards your intended audience. With that in mind, create a project that is unique to your interpretation of the databases you are comparing. Typically, comparison infographics are split down the middle vertically or horizontally with one option on each side. Use contrasting colors to set the two options apart.
