The dependent and independent variables are the most common studied variables in research studies, and are measured to determine and interpret findings. The dependent variable, also called the change variable, is manipulated by the independent variable. At the same time, the independent variable, also called the unchanged variable, is the variable that manipulate the dependent variable (Nisticò, et al., 2020).
In the hourly rounding fall prevention program I am proposing for older adult patients 65 years and above, the dependent variable is the rate of patient falls. In contrast, the independent variable is the structured hourly rounding that incorporates the 4Ps elements: position, potty, pain, and possession. I hypothesize that the structured hourly rounding staff nurses will implement using the 4Ps, will significantly decreasing patient fall rates and improving patient outcomes (Carpenter et al., 2021). As hourly rounding is implemented continuously and effectively, the rate of patients will continue to reduce to the point where patient outcomes will continue to improve. The Null hypothesis is that there will be no significant change in the rate of fall as hourly rounding is implemented, while my Alternative hypothesis is that there will be a significant change in the rate of fall as hourly rounding is implemented. If there is a significant change in the implementation of the structured hourly rounding, as I expected, the null hypothesis will be rejected, otherwise, the Null will be accepted and alternative rejected. (Carpenter et al., 2021).
