Document Paper
Document Paper Question 1: Answer one of the following in an essay of at least 2 pages. Your essay should quote from both of the documents in question. 1. The New Deal brought about significant changes in the relationship between individual citizens and the federal government. Pick two of the four letters to the White House and explain how specific elements of the New Deal may have shaped the author’s expectations of government and the role they saw government playing in their life. In this response, you should mention specific New Deal policies and programs and discuss who they were intended to benefit and how they might have impacted the letter writers. 2. The Second World War profoundly shaped the lives of Americans. Discuss how the war altered the lives, outlook, or beliefs of two of the four Americans whose testimony or story was included in the WWII Module documents. Did they share any similar experiences or lessons learned from the war? Were there important differences in their experience of the war, or the meaning they took from it? In this essay, you should think deeply about the contrasting points of view you have encountered: Did war have a moral meaning? Could the lessons of wartime be applied to life after the war? What was the status of the individual or individual conscience in a time of powerful group behavior? Question 2: Write a paper of at least two pages, double spaced, based on one of the two prompts below. Affluent Society In 1959, Vice President Richard Nixon travelled to Moscow to present an exhibition of American goods, culture, and ideas. While in Moscow, Nixon gave a live televised speech explaining to Soviet citizens what “Freedom Means to Us”; he also spent hours debating with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev about the relative merits and flaws of the capitalist and communist economic systems. While touring a model of a “typical” American home at the exhibition, Nixon pointed to a dishwasher and engaged in the following exchange with Khrushchev: Nixon: This is our newest model. This is the kind which is built in thousands of units for direct installations in the houses. In America, we like to make life easier for women… Khrushchev: Your capitalistic attitude toward women does not occur under Communism. Nixon: I think that this attitude towards women is universal. What we want to do, is make life more easy for our housewives. Drawing upon Richard Nixon’s “What Freedom Means to Us” and Betty Freidan’s “The Problem With No Name,” write an essay of at least two pages answering the following: • What do you think Richard Nixon though freedom meant to American women, and how, in Nixon’s view, did American capitalism promote women’s freedom? • How do you think Betty Freidan would have responded to Nixon in Moscow? In her view, what did freedom mean to women?
