Topic: Discuss your position regarding access to and coverage for health care. Are we obligated to provide access to and coverage for health care for all Americans as an entitlement (a right)? Or should health care be considered a commodity that is subject to the influences of economic, social, and market demand (supply and demand)? Be sure to include the rationale for your position in your discussion.
Access to and coverage for health care should be an entitlement for all individuals without taking into consideration sex, race or nationality. Approximately 1 out of 10 individuals in our country do not have health insurance (Berchick et al., 2018). As a result, many people do not get the chance to have a high-quality healthcare. In addition, individuals without health insurances are more exposed to not having a PCP (primary health care provider) and may not even have the means to afford medications or services when needed. With the shift in healthcare from treatment of disease to prevention, the importance of routine/preventive examinations like annual physicals, cancer screening, diabetes screening are services that these individuals without healthcare, cannot afford. On the other hand, with access to the right information, individuals can benefit from programs like affordable Obama Care, family planning, Medicaid and Medicare in order to have health care coverage, making it possible for them to have access to preventive care and the treatments needed for chronic conditions or diseases. In conclusion, as a nurse and advocator for my patients, I strongly believe we all should have the right to have access and coverage to high quality health care.
