a. Review Sykes and Matza’s five deviance neutralization techniques. For each one, give an example of a deviant behavior and how someone might employ that neutralization technique to justify the behavior. From your experience and knowledge, do you think some of these techniques are more common than others?
b. We first introduced the concept of social control during Week 2 and many of you applied that concept through media analysis in your discussion boards, papers, etc. How does this most recent mini lesson commitment refine your understanding of social control theory?
c.Although labeling theory is our first “social reaction” theory, we’ve been thinking about how different audiences may react to behavior throughout our course. Our conversation with Dr. Elder last week sheds additional light on this complicated topic and gives us a lot to reflect on in terms of panic, pandemics, the power of labeling deviant behavior, etc. Choose one historical or contemporary epidemic or pandemic (e.g., HIV/AIDS, 1918 flu pandemic, SARS, COVID-19) to analyze how social reactions lead to certain behaviors and/or people being deemed deviant. You’re welcome to reference Dr. Elder’s visit but be sure to also include your own analysis.
