No matter how carefully I word the instructions for the Research Proposal project, I find students often misspend their production time going down the wrong road and submit an action proposal or a goods and services proposal or something other than the research proposal assigned, so I want to remind you of a few points while you are still in the production process:
This is a project about research. Do not propose a change or action or purchase. No matter how good your idea is, the antithesis of good research is starting with a conclusion before you have accumulated sufficient data. Instead, notice a problem, take note of a situation, or respond to a request (often, in the workplace or in school, the research project is the result of a request rather than independently begun, and for the purposes of this project, you should decide whether you have received an imaginary request to research the problem you select or whether you are suggesting the research independently) and then design a plan to research the problem and find a solution.
If you do have or are assigned to evaluate a particular issue (Q company is dissatisfied with the current inventory software and wants to make a change but needs to know if XWZ program specifically will meet their needs, or the HOA improvement committee has suggested an onsite childcare center be opened in the community and wants to know if it will be cost-effective), you will still start with a research plan but it may take the form of a feasibility study. In other words, not “this is my proposed solution to the problem” but rather “this is the plan to research whether a change is needed or whether this is an appropriate solution.”
Keep it simple. Do not choose a problem/situation that is huge or design a research plan so complex or lengthy or expensive that you cannot complete it before the end of the semester.
Your audience for the research proposal is the person(s)/entity with the authority to approve/fund the research project you propose. Keep in mind that your audience for the Recommendation Report may be different.
Review the instructions for the Module 4 Recommendation Report so that you are making appropriate distinctions between the proposed research and the eventual recommendation.
Whatever research plan you design, you may assume it was approved by your audience and move on to begin/complete the research.
