First Song: Phase V
ASSIGNMENT
Continuing with your song from First Song: Phase IV, complete this unit’s Contemporary Songwriting readings. This involves reading each chapter’s EXPOSITION section and then following its TUTORIAL instructions. The readings are listed here:
- Contemporary Songwriting, Part II Chapters 23 and 24 (for Live users) — in Chapter 23, begin the TUTORIAL at the INSTRUMENTAL MELODIES section and skip what comes before it
- Live users should adhere to these requirements:
- An instrument device other than Cheap Electric Piano (aka E-Piano Cheap) should be used in the Melody track.
- A new MIDI track should be created below the Melody track, and the Melody Bridge clips should be moved into it at the bridge.
- The second track should have an instrument device different from that of the Melody track.
- Instrumental ad-libs should be composed for the outro in the second track, following a modified version of the melody requirements that were used for the verse, chorus, and bridge melodies:
- The ad-libs should be a single eight-measure melodic phrase.
- Al melody notes should be quantized to 1/8 or 1/16.
- Melody notes should not overlap.
- All melody notes should be from the white keys of the computer MIDI keyboard.
- The Melody track and the second track should each use reverb devices. They can be the same device or different ones.
- A device with a name ending in “Master.adg” (or starting with “Master“) from Audio Effects > Audio Effects Rack > Mixing > Mastering (or from Audio Effects > Utilities > Audio Effects Rack > Mixing & Mastering) in the browser should be used in the Master track.
- These requirements are for Phase V work specifically. Remember that the First Song, as turned in at Phase V, is assessed and graded using requirements from all song phases. More information about this is under GRADING PROCEDURES below.
Write your song’s lyrics following all instructions in the TUTORIAL of the Contemporary Songwriting book’s Lyrics chapter for the book part you are using, thus completing all tasks in that chapter’s REVIEW section:
