Nursing Leadership and Management
Discussion Protocol. Please observe the following 3 x 3 rule: when writing your weekly discussions: – A minimum of three paragraphs per DQ. Each paragraph should have a minimum of three sentences.
REPLY BOTH PEERS
PEER 1:As a nursing student, I have a responsibility to prioritize patient safety above all else. While I have maintained strict adherence to infection control protocols to minimize any risk of exposure, the recent incident in the clinical setting has made me realize the potential for unintentional transmission of HIV or other blood-borne diseases. In deciding what to do, I must carefully consider the ethical implications and weigh the need for disclosure against the potential consequences (Delgado, 2019).
While I have not shared my HIV status with my classmates or instructors, the situation may warrant a different approach. The first concern is ensuring the well-being of patients. If there is any possibility that my status could pose a risk to them, they must be informed (Frain, 2017). However, I must also consider the legal and ethical frameworks surrounding HIV disclosure in healthcare settings.
In this scenario, it may be necessary to disclose my HIV status to the school administration and clinical placement coordinators. This information would enable them to assess the situation and implement appropriate measures to safeguard both patients and healthcare workers. Furthermore, when entering the workforce as a registered nurse, I would need to disclose my HIV status to future employers by legal requirements and professional standards.

PEER 2:The moral obligation to keep people safe comes first and should be taken into account above all else. In order to guarantee that the required precautions are followed to prevent transmission, it could be necessary to reveal your status if there is a possibility that patients could be exposed to HIV through bodily fluids. In general, unless there are explicit policies or procedures in place that necessitate disclosure, I am not required or obligated to disclose my HIV status to the school. Confidentiality rules and regulations should protect my HIV status, which is considered private health information (Limits on Confidentiality and HIV Disclosure Laws, n.d.).
Additionally, considering the high risk of potential stigma and discrimination that individuals living with HIV may face, it is important to weigh the potential consequences of disclosure on your personal and professional life (Facts About HIV Stigma | HIV Basics | HIV/AIDS | CDC, n.d.). If your HIV status is known, you can have a serious concern of being shunned or treated unfairly in a conservative community or place of employment.
In the end, the choice of whether or not to disclose your HIV status should be made after carefully weighing the advantages and disadvantages of doing so as well as your degree of comfort. To assess the circumstances and arrive at a well-informed conclusion, speaking with a counselor or healthcare expert may be beneficial. It’s also critical to keep in mind that you have the freedom to choose with whom you share your HIV status and that, while doing so, you should put your own safety and wellbeing first.
