Research college options
Assignment College/Company Research
Based on the career that you have chosen, what kind of education is required? If it’s a Bachelor’s Degree or higher, you will need to perform research and select one college for this write-up. If your chosen career doesn’t require higher than an Associate Degree, then you will perform research on a company that employs people in your career.
Don’t place limits on yourself. If you plan to stay in California but want to explore a college or company out of state, go for it! My main goal for this project is for you to learn how to research, not make you decide the rest of your life.
Select one of the options below and follow the instructions under that tab. As always, reach out to me with any questions.
Step 1: Research college options
If your plan is to continue on to get a Bachelor’s degree or higher, you will need to research a college based on the major that you need for your career. If your career requires a Graduate degree, it is your choice if you want to do your research on the Graduate or Undergraduate program that you would pursue.

Step 2: To help you decide, take some college tours. Check out some of these virtual tour options:

https://campustours.com/Links to an external site.
If the school isn’t listed on these websites, try checking out their own website and look for virtual tours there.
Step 3: Go to the college website and look up their tuition. Note down the annual tuition, any campus fees, room & board, books, and any other fees they list on their website. Calculate the cost to complete the degree. Use 2 years for an Associate degree, 4 years for a Bachelor’s degree, add 2 years for a Masters degree or 4 years for a Doctorate.
Step 4: What type of student life is there? Are there resources specifically for transfer students? What about a first-gen or EOP program or any other club/program that you would be interested in joining?
For your write-up, answer the following questions:
What college did you choose? What degree will you earn from that college? (ex. Master’s degree in Education; Bachelor’s degree in Psychology)
What stood out to you when you did the virtual tour? What do you notice about the campus? Did you spend more time looking at a specific building or campus area?
List out what you found about their tuition. Write out any questions, concerns, or anything you noted when looking at this information.
What programs or clubs do they have that interest you?
Step 1: Research company options
If you will be going straight into your job industry after completing an Associate Degree or Certificate, you will need to research a company that you may want to work for.

Step 2: To help you with your search, I suggest looking at some third party websites that may give you some insight into the company’s culture.
Some good ones are:
https://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm
Step 3: Go to that company’s website and see what jobs they are hiring for. Do they have the job you’re looking for? Is the careers or jobs page easy to find? For the jobs that you found, note down the salary and any benefits or perks they provide. If they pay hourly, calculate your yearly salary (assume full time: hourly rate x 40 hours a week x 52 weeks a year)
Step 4: What do you know about the company’s culture and how they treat their employees? What does their website convey to you?
For your write-up, answer the following questions:
What company did you choose? What is the job title that you want at that company?
What stood out to you when you looked at their website or Glassdoor reviews?
List out what you found about their salary, if any information at all. Does this seem like a company that pays a living wage?
What additional benefits can you get from working there – pension, insurance, vacation, child care…?
