Plan for Success
My preceptors for this rotation are a family medicine nurse practitioner and a pediatric rotation. Therefore, I will have the chance to see infants, children, adolescents, and women, in addition to the adult and geriatric populations I have been accustomed to during my previous clinicals. I anticipate learning various procedures such as performing PAP smears and care involving the pediatric population. Moreover, I have learned that each clinician has their way of treating a patient, so I am excited to learn different ways of patient interaction. Clinical experience is an essential component of nurse practitioner education that relies heavily on preceptors. Preceptors act as role models and provide clinical learning experiences that assist students in applying theory to real-life situations and developing APN practice competencies (Amirehsani, 2019). Based on my experience, having a high-quality mentor who is generous in their knowledge and willing to teach is a gem. The transition from registered nurse to nurse practitioner can get intimidating. Therefore, it is essential to be with someone whose teaching strategies facilitate personal and professional growth and impact NP education (Pleshkan & Hussey, 2020). However, preceptors may face barriers, including time constraints, lack of space, employer support, and productivity demands (Pleshkan & Hussey, 2020).
- I am looking forward to new learning opportunities, especially with the pediatric population. My clinical objectives for this course include the following:
1. gather a focused history, perform a thorough physical examination relative to the complaint, and develop good differential diagnoses.
2. write comprehensive episodic focused notes on time.
3. formulate a satisfactory plan to include diagnostic studies and treatment options.
4. verbally present cases to the preceptor with the proposed plan. I hope to perform procedures commonly seen in this clinical setting. And lastly, I hope to gain more confidence in my knowledge of various chronic conditions and their treatment guidelines.
According to the CDC, six in ten Americans have at least one chronic condition. Chronic conditions impact health care costs within America. Chronic conditions are also responsible for causing the majority of disabilities and deaths in America (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022). Throughout my clinical experiences, I have had the opportunity to help manage many chronic conditions. One of the most common chronic conditions is Diabetes. This is by far the most common chronic diagnosis I have seen in my clinical settings. Managing Diabetes can be very complex. I look forward to learning more about how to manage those more complex and common chronic conditions. I also hope that I can help teach my patients about the importance of managing their conditions. An engaged patient is essential to having effective treatment plans for heart disease and diabetes (CDC, 2022). It will be a goal of mine to help educate my patients so they feel like they can be more involved with their care.
