In surgical units, the risk of healthcare-associated infections poses a significant threat to patient safety. However, a nursing theory has emerged that emphasizes the role of proper hand hygiene in reducing the transmission of diseases within the clinical setting based on extensive observations and a thorough review of recent literature (Drews et al., 2019). The concept of “hand hygiene” encompasses the thorough washing and disinfection of hands by healthcare providers, while “infection control” refers to the systematic efforts to prevent and manage infections within healthcare facilities. The proposition at the core of this theory is that maintaining high hand hygiene standards significantly decreases the risk of healthcare-associated infections (Kolasiński, 2018). Hence, this theory underscores the critical relationship between these two concepts and the potential impact on patient safety. Although it was always a set standard, COVID-19 highlighted the importance of hand hygiene. Hand hygiene audits that were done blindly by administrators from different departments of the hospital, unfortunately, proved that many healthcare professionals were not properly washing their hands. Ultimately, using the data from the project, education was continuously instilled in all departments, and the units that were below 80% were held accountable by cutting the budget for various projects; instead, the money was used to place more sanitizing units. The message was clear that all employees needed to follow the hand hygiene protocol if we were going to lower our infection rates.
In conclusion, proper hand hygiene is pivotal in infection control and patient safety in surgical and healthcare settings. This theory emphasizes the significance of “hand hygiene” and its profound impact on “infection control.” Hence, nurses and healthcare providers can work together to optimize hand hygiene practices, ultimately minimizing the risk of healthcare-associated infections by recognizing the direct relationship between these concepts.
