A primary focus of Reconstruction was helping newly freed men and women establish independent lives through education, laws, and assistance.  Many historians believe this was a positive time in our history because it led to very important legislation like Amendments 13, 14, and 15 which freed the slaves and ensured they had a right to vote. The Freedmen’s Bureau was created to help freed slaves transition to a life outside of slavery by building schools, helping with food and medical attention and giving free legal advice.  In fact, the first objective of the Freedmen’s Bureau, when a new person came to them, was to see them reunited with their family.  For these reasons, many of the events during the reconstruction positively impacted people for generations.
