Understand the relationship between meaning and language manipulation and between language and logic.
Assignment objective:
After completing this assignment, students will be able to recognize common argumentative fallacies from the list of key terms in this module’s Instructor’s Brief Remarks page.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the creating of common fallacies as a learning tool for recognizing fallacies in texts.
Connection to module objectives:
Understand the relationship between meaning and language manipulation and between language and logic.
Identify logical fallacies, including false cause, personal attack, and appeal to pity, in the arguments of works in different disciplines.
- Steps:
- After reading the key terms from this module’s Instructor’s Brief Remarks, create an original list of examples (in sentence form) of five (5) different fallacious arguments.
Importantly, write these examples based on anything related to LPC’s environment. This could be examples of campus life, campus buildings, your other courses, parking issues, etc.
Example: Hasty Generalization
- “I’m getting a “C” grade in my math class because the instructor doesn’t explain the lessons clearly. I’ll always receive a “C” grade in all math classes because all math instructors don’t explain lessons clearly. (This is also a Slippery Slope fallacy.)
- Use a Word or Google doc to type in the five examples.
