Preparing Discussion
All answers should use terminology from throughout the course from the Study Guide for Art Terminology. All answers should be your original thoughts not copied or paraphrased from other nor from published material. All answers should be in paragraph form and should include examples of art works and explanations using course terminology. Your answers should show that you have accomplished the objectives of this course (See page 1 of the Course Syllabus).
Questions:
Art Criticism involves the critical analysis of an art work. There are several steps to the process that move from simple to complex cognitive levels. The Study Guide, Looking at Art Seeing Questions, leads you through the process. Discuss, in paragraph form, the following art work, Sorrow Falls Like Mist, by Donna McGee using art terminology and the Study Guide, Looking at Art Seeing Questions. Note: You should have prepared your answer when completing the Study Assignment on Art Criticism in Module 6.
In paragraph form, summarize your views regarding art collecting. Do you believe art should be valued as a commodity, collected to add prestige to one’s social status, or does it have an intrinsic value related more to what it adds to our lives? Give examples of artist and art works from the video in the study assignment for the lesson on collecting to support your views. Use terminology from the Study Guide for Art Terminology. Don’t forget about New Media, New Ideas terminology. Note: You should have prepared your answer when completing the Study Assignment on Art Collecting in Module 6.
- Discuss the new media and new ideas terminology as applied to each of the video artists featured in Module 5: New Media, New Ideas: Goldsworthy, Chihuly, Muniz and Christo/Jean Claude. Discuss how at least 2 terms (below) apply to each artist and give examples from the art featured in the videos. Artists must be discussed individually, not as a group. Do not use the same terms for each artist. Some of the terms you should be using are: Conceptual Art, Volunteerism, Collaboration, Environmental Issues, Social Issues, Non-traditional mediums, Non-traditional spaces and places to show or create art, Time and Motion, Assemblage, and Recycling/Repurposing. Give examples of how the artists used these ideas in their art.
