Research Question:
What were the distinctive social components that resulted in a rise in suicide rates of 13-18-year-old females in 2015?
Thesis Statement:
The huge increase in the suicide of teenage girls from 2014 until 2015 can be attributed to the combined effect of growing social media activities, academic stress, as well as the shortage of psychological services for adolescent girls.
Narrative Description:
The adolescent years are a period known to be a vital one in which the person will have a succession of not only physical but also mental and socio-emotional growth. During this period, teenagers have a unique set of social issues that might hinder them from enjoying peaceful mental health and wellness. Suicide as a public health problem, has got the limelight, especially with the rise in suicide cases among female teenagers in the past years.
In 2015 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed disturbing rates of suicide attempts and deaths among female teenagers from 13 to 18 years old. This is a worrying fact because it puts suicide as the second leading cause of death in teenagers. In the years from 2014 to 2015 rates of juvenile female suicides shot up 14% compared to a more stable rate regarding male juvenile suicides (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Recognizing the main social elements giving rise to this troubling rise is very important to create an effective program of prevention and intervention.
Through my research, I hope to explore three main social influences that may have contributed to the rise in adolescent female suicides in 2015: The rise of social media and cyberbullying, additional stress from college, and shortage of mental health services.
Primarily, the flourishing of social media sites in the early 2010s resulted in a revolution of social spaces for teenagers. While technology comes with various benefits, extreme use and suffering in the hands of cyberbullying have been associated with increased levels of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among adolescent girls (Viner et al., 2019). The perpetual demand to cultivate a flawless virtual self and the ease with which peers can use anonymity to harass one another may have a huge effect on vulnerable adolescents.
In addition, the academic stress that lasts for decades has become one of the main concerns for adolescents but in the last few years, it has become more intense. Teenage girls frequently experience higher demands and imposing requirements which can lead to fatigue, hopelessness, and even suicidal behavior (Curran & Hill, 2019). The stressful process of college admissions, standardized tests, and keeping a high GPA can be involved in heightening suicide risk.
Lastly, despite growing youth awareness of mental health issues, many young people do not have enough support and treatment available to them. The presence of stigma, financial barriers, and a shortage of mental health specialists make it hard for teens to get the care they require (Kuhlman et al., 2020). This service gap may be subject to a vulnerable young generation, especially those from marginalized communities, with no resources to cope with mental health emergencies.
This would be done by reviewing current literature and data on these topics to thoroughly understand the mental health crisis for vulnerable youth and to provide recommendations for supporting them as well. This topic is highly timely and substantial since teen suicide nowadays is a global issue. Investigating the complicated social causes of this devastating occurrence can help develop the policy, educational, and mental health approaches able to serve and protect teenagers who are in desperate need. The issue of stigma is one that I am very passionate about. I am confident that this research will yield some important insights.
