Social statistics 3041
Final Project for Social Statistics Total Points Possible: 150 The final project is to demonstrate that you can use data in the real world. NOTE: you do not have to do all parts. You can select which ones you do to earn the points you want to earn. The project is out of 150 points, but you can earn up to 200 points if you want. This is a choose your own adventure assignment. Steps 1-5 are Required; choice is within Steps 1, 2 & 3: 1. Locate a dataset(10 points) you want to use and have access to in one of the following ways: a. The dataset can be downloaded to SPSS or Excel b. The dataset comes with a program where you can manipulate the data to create graphs and run statistics c. Yes, you may use datasets you are familiar with from other classes or from your thesis research. However, you may not use the same statistics you’ve already run and use the same variables as in your thesis or class project d. If you start using a database and get some of the things below done but then you figure out it won’t let you do the remaining ones, it is okay to switch datasets half way through. Just let me know why you switched. You can even switch more than once if needed. Just make it clear on your document where you are switching and why. e. You can find your own, but here are some examples include the ones provided by your guest lecturers or that I’ve listed here (but remember some of these are very limited in what you can do, so you could only use for some of the exercises and not all): i. Go to https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/ 1. Choose “Countries” from the top. 2. On the next screen, pick a country. 3. On the country page, look through some of the possible variables. 4. Dr. Conlon Mayfield likes to choose “People and Society.” She usually picks something like median age. There is a ranking of a lot of variables. If you click the ranking, it will show a list for that variable for all countries. ii. https://gssdataexplorer.norc.org/trends iii. https://www.pewresearch.org/tools-and-resources/ iv. https://dataunodc.un.org/ 2. Download the dataset to SPSS or excel or figure out how to use the tools provided on the website of your choice (10 points for SPSS and 10 points for Excel and 10 points for using tools on the website—yes you can do more than one earn up to 30 points here; grade based on evidence when doing part 3) 3. Choose a variety of these options that equal the points you want to earn on this project: a. Choose two variables and hypothesize on their relationship. Then test your hypothesis using the statistics we’ve used in the class based on the level of measurement of each variable. (ex. I hypothesize that those getting As in the class will choose this option so I would run the appropriate test to measure the relationship between grades and choice). (30 points) i. Write out your hypothesis ii. Run the appropriate test (correlation or crosstabs) for your variables to see if your hypothesis is supported or not supported. iii. Copy and paste the output to your document iv. Explain the output and state whether your hypothesis was supported or not. b. Find measures of central tendency for 4 variables. (5 points) i. Include variables that would be appropriate for mean, median, and mode. ii. Copy the output on your document with variables clearly defined and explain why mean median or mode was the correct choice for that variable c. Find measures of spread for these same variables (5 points) i. Include range, interquartile range, frequency tables, and standard deviation where appropriate ii. Copy output with clearly defined variables onto your document d. Create graphs, tables, and visual representations of data i. using the correct level of measurement for the graph you are creating and using the correct number of variables for the graph you are creating. 1. Tips https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/types-of-graphs-fordata-visualization ii. Make sure all axes and charts are correctly and clearly labeled iii. Make sure you explain your graph in text as well as copy the chart to your document iv. Help for graphs in SPSS though your book has helps too https://stats.oarc.ucla.edu/spss/seminars/spssgraphics/graphics-in-spss/ v. Help for doing graphs in excel (which are much prettier and lots of options) https://depictdatastudio.com/great-graphs-you-can-make-inmicrosoft-excel/ 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Pie chart (5 points) Bar chart (5 points) Histogram (5 points) Frequency polygon (5 points) Line chart (5 points) Scatterplot (5 points) Frequency distribution with intervals and cumulative frequency table and graph (10 points) 8. Percent change table (10 points) 9. Correlation table with 4 variables (10 points) 10. Simple cross tabs with two variables (5 points) with statistical significance explained (5 points) 11. Cross tabs with three variables (5 points) with statistical significance explained (5 points) 12. Partial correlation explaining which variable you are holding constant (10 points) 13. Unique visual charts to describe some variable of your choice (5 points each one) a. https://www.juiceanalytics.com/writing/20-bestexamples-of-charts-and-graphs e. Critique any of your statistics or the variables found in your dataset i. Critique the methodology for how they collected the data (one paragraph connecting to lecture or Best 10 points) ii. Critique the outcomes of your associations linking to lecture and Best (one paragraph 10 points) f. BONUS ONLY: Use any of the statistics from Chapters 10-19 in the correct manner WITH explanations of why you chose this statistic for those variables and what the results mean (20 points each up to 60 points) 4. REQUIRED: Write a conclusion stating what you learned by doing this project, the challenges you faced, the limitations of your dataset, and anything else you think is relevant for a conclusion paragraph on this exercise. (20 points) 5. Turn document with your work to assignments dropbox. You can copy and paste screenshots from websites or outputs from SPSS or Excel into your document. Be prepared to discuss your project when date is announced.
