Exploring Ethics in Relationship Dynamics
Chapter Review Discussion | Discussion Assignment (Chapter 7) Please write comments on questions 1 and 2 in more than 4 sentences (Question 1). In your own words, explain how responsibilities can depend upon the relationship one has with other people. Relationships determine the responsibilities we have with other people. I believe that it all begins with a person’s integrity and morals. These are gained from one’s surroundings and upbringing. These will determine how you treat other people and the responsibilities you have to them. How you were raised by your parents will influence the relationship that you have with your children. You may have a high sense of responsibility to your children or a low one based on your own experiences growing up. As an employee, you may have a large sense of responsibility for your company because you want to succeed and for your company to succeed. If an employee doesn’t feel a responsibility to the company they work for, he or she may not perform their job at a high level. It all comes down to an individual’s integrity and morals in how they treat others. (Question 5 in text): Define trust and loyalty in your own words. Do all employees have a responsibility to be trustworthy? To be loyal? Justify your answer. Why does Duska believe that loyalty is inappropriate in the workplace? Trust is the fundamental reliance placed on individuals in various situations. Loyalty, on the other hand, is a behavior that can be outwardly displayed, yet can also harbor duplicity. In an ideal workplace setting, employees are expected to exhibit trustworthiness, but is it morally justifiable to demand such qualities? Can we realistically expect individuals to embody traits like trustworthiness, loyalty, honesty, and ethical conduct? As DesJardins (2020) articulates, “especially in a society that values individual freedom, not everything that is legal is ethically right, and not everything that is ethically wrong is illegal.” This presents a perpetual dilemma where ethical correctness is subjective, contingent upon personal values and beliefs. Ethics, as defined, encompass “the beliefs, values, and principles guiding decisions made by both individuals and organizations.”
