I, the resident alien, as I decide how to best fix the problems facing the earth post-invasion, generously give you the opportunity to express your opinion about the best government to implement into society now that the government by and for the people has been defeated. Hence I pose the following questions:
- After reading Alexander Hamilton, who describes the majority of people as a ‘great beast’ that must be protected from themselves, I have to ask what our role, as benevolent alien conqueror, should be over the individuals we have inherited and for whom we are now responsible? What type of government will best outline the limitations and freedoms to be afforded the individual in society?
- I read Thoreau, who says: “The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think truly right.” I can’t help but see that as tied to what people call morals. So I have to ask whether or not morals actually exist within a quantifiable version of human nature that can be implemented into government? Or are they merely a societal construct meant to confuse or enforce social norms?
- After reading Madison, who says: “liberty is to factions, what air is to fire,” I now fear widespread arsonist destruction. What is to be done to control social minorities, especially if they are followers of Patrick Henry who assertively demanded: “Give me liberty or give me death”? This is very troubling to me.
- Then to that pesky Thoreau again, who also asks: “Is in not possible to take a step further towards recognizing and organizing the rights of man”? So my question is: Is there a way that we can combine different ideologies to find a more humanistic, yet effective form of governance?
