In “Femininity” (1984), Susan Brownmiller offers the following “basic distinction” between her society’s ideas about masculinity and femininity:
“The masculine principle is better understood as a driving ethos of superiority designed to inspire straightforward, confident success, while the feminine principle is composed of vulnerability, the need for protection, the formalities of compliance and the avoidance of conflict.”
For Essay #1, your task is to test whether or not Brownmiller’s observations hold true today in the portrayal of men and women in contemporary advertising.
Write an essay in which you analyze one advertisement, from either a current magazine, a TV commercial, or an Internet source, for what it suggests about our perceptions regarding gender.
One expectation of this assignment is for you to describe your advertisement clearly and precisely,selecting which details you find important when compared with Brownmiller’s point of view
A second expectation is that you make a claim as part of your analysis in which you address whether or not Brownmiller’s observations are still pertinent today.
If your findings agree that Brownmiller’s observations remain true, you should point out in what way and to what extent they remain valid. If your findings disagree with Brownmiller, perhaps completely or only partially, you should explain why and offer your own definitions of the “masculine” and “feminine” principles shown in your advertisement.

Format: This essay should be typewritten in a 12-pt. Times-New-Roman font, double spaced with 1” margins, stapled in the upper left-hand corner. You do not need a cover page, but you should have your name and an original title at the top of the first page.
Length: 2-3 pages. This essay comprises 10% of your grade for the course.
