In this research paper assignment, you will develop your own insights into a topic of your choice by investigating a particular driving question that intrigues you and sparks your curiosity. For this project to be substantial and academically challenging, it needs to focus on a question that can be answered in more than one way and viewed from more than one perspective. The more specific the topic and research question, the better.
- To help you answer your question, you’ll look for information from credible, valid sources. You need well-chosen sources to be able to produce a well-written paper! The quality of your writing is directly related to the quality of the sources. However, you don’t have to use only peer-reviewed sources. You can use any kind of source that is valuable and relevant to your research, as long as you understand the credibility and validity of that source. You’ll cite from a minimum of ten sources in your writing.
- Because this essay will be written for an academic audience, you’ll document the information you learn from outside sources by citing those sources in MLA style. Your essay will be carefully researched, thoughtfully written, and deliberately organized, and will include a thesis statement, in-text citations, a Works Cited page, and a title.
- Your paper will be much more than simply a description of your research. Just doing a lot of research and correctly incorporating a lot of sources doesn’t constitute a good college-level essay. You need to do something unique and interesting with the information you’ve learned: you need to show evidence of your own thinking; make your own assertions and give your own insights; and analyze and synthesize the information you encounter. Additionally, you want to choose sources carefully, making sure you work with a variety of valid, credible, and relevant information, and that you demonstrate your understanding of that information. The sources you choose say a lot about you as an ethical, thoughtful writer and participant in the conversation about your topic.
Overall, your essay will:
Establish a thesis
Support that thesis with reasons and evidence
Present background information to explain your topic
Include your own insights, ideas, arguments, and assertions about your topic
Synthesize your own thoughts with the ideas and information found in your research
Include substantial, thoughtful analysis and interpretation of the information you learn
Acknowledge at least one counterargument that is opposed to your own main argument or stance
Incorporate a variety of sources, experts, and voices into your own text, and represent sources fairly and accurately
Include information from valid, credible, reliable sources
Have a clear, logical organizational pattern
Introduce quotes and paraphrases with signal phrases
Have a minimum of ten sources* cited within the text (and, therefore, listed on the Works Cited page)
- Include six scholarly, peer-reviewed sources
- Include properly formatted in-text citations and Works Cited page
- Be approximately 8-10 pages
- Be extensively revised, edited, and proofread
- Follow the protocol of MLA format, documentation, and citation
- * Some of you will need more than ten sources, depending on the content of each source.
