Philosophy Question
PHI110 Final Essay Prompt 1. Due Date: 5/10/2024 2. 1200-1500 words, double space, 12 pts, submitted through Blackboard. 3. Please choose one set of questions and compose an essay according to your responses to the essay question. 4. Please don’t just summarize what you’ve learned from the readings or lectures but also develop your critical thought about the readings! 5. There’s no specific format for citation. But if you do cite some external sources in your essay, make sure you at least specify the name of the article/news/works (or links to the internet sources) and the author’s name. 6. If you want to develop your own work, do let me know with your submitted outline (due 4/22). Let me see what’s your rough idea on the paper and make sure the topic is philosophically relevant. (General) Find a work like news novels, fiction, comics, animation, TV episodes, movies, or commentary, columns that have a plot that is related to the topics that we’ve discussed (for example, death, meaning of life, procreative liberty, freedom of speech). Briefly introduce the news or the plot of the work and tell me how the plot relates to some of the topics we’ve discussed. And briefly give your comment on either (1) whether the work properly presents an philosophical question or philosophical theory, or (2) whether the philosophical position that the work holds is plausible or not, or (3) whether the philosophical view that is held by characters in works does help them to act properly or not. (Death) Summarize Nagel’s view on death and how he argues that loss of life is bad in general. One important assumption made by Nagel is that a person can be harmed even if the harm is not experienced. Do you find such an assumption plausible? Do you agree with Nagel’s view? Why or why not? If you don’t agree with Nagel, what’s your view on death? And what’s your consideration? (Meaning of Life) How does Nagel describe the raise of sense of absurd? What kind of stance does he take toward our capacity (positive, negative, neutral)? Briefly summarize Nagel’s view on the meaning of life. Do you find his view plausible? State your consideration. If not, then put forward your view on the meaning of life. Which sense of the meaning of life should we adopt? Is there an objective sense of the meaning of life? Or the meaning of life is defined by each individual? Which side is more plausible? What do you think? (Procreative Liberty) Read Anderson’s “Is Women’s Labor a Commodity?” And briefly summarize how Anderson argue for a position in favor of banning surrogate mother legally? Evaluate whether you find her argument plausible or not. Evaluate whether legal prohibition is adequate or there are other better alternatives. (Freedom of Speech) Briefly summarize Mill’s defense of freedom of speech. And briefly describe what the harm principle is and how the principle is used as a constraint of speech. Evaluate Mill’s defense and whether the harm principle is clear enough to properly regulate our speech. If the principle is not clear enough to serve its purpose, give some examples (they can be either actual or hypothetical cases) to support your position.
