In my clinical site in Los Angeles, it focus primarily on adults and geriatrics, the overall health of this population is complex. Morbidity rates in adults and geriatrics are often from chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorders. Also, this population suffers from mental health conditions like depression, cognitive decline, and more. The mortality rates are often from these chronic conditions, which stresses the importance of holistic care to the older population.
In this patient population, the health behaviors vary, and are dependent on dietary habits, exercise compliance as well as drug adherence. Encouraging older adults to take up preventative health measures is a challenge due to barriers such as being less mobile, lack of finances and ignorance. Che Had et al. (2023) argue that these challenges act as risk factors associated with aging, which usually result in delayed or poor healthcare-seeking behavior. The solution to these challenges is essential, and this is where targeted health promotion services and programs come in handy. One of the key ideas in Los Angeles is community-based fitness and health practices for the elderly. Despite their advantages, such as the increase in physical activity, socialization and mental well-being, there are also disadvantages that include a lack of access to those who may be physically incapacitated plus additional barriers for people with financial constraints.
In addition, raising awareness and implementing better outreach programs will help overcome disparities in access to preventative health measures. There needs to be a collaborative effort between healthcare providers, community organizations and policymakers to develop and execute interventions to help combat the unique health needs of the older adult population in Los Angeles.
