Freewriting is a technique of nonstop composing designed to loosen restraints we sometimes impose on our own thinking. Although freewriting comes in many forms, the basic formula is simple. If you have never used freewriting as a brainstorming activity, give it a try here. Please note you will complete this freewriting exercise on the Macmillan platform. You will earn points for completing the exercise but will not be assessed on the content of your writing.
First, think about your persuasive essay topic and your research so far.
Write about anything regarding your topic—your stance on the topic, your key points, a specific point from one of your sources, etc.
Freewrite about your topic nonstop for 10 minutes, and do not worry about grammar or sentence structure. Just write!
Now that you’re done with freewriting, there are many ways to move forward. Follow the path that works for you. There is no wrong way to move forward. These are just suggestions to help you move from freewriting to drafting.
You could take what you’ve written and start to organize it into an outline.
You could take what you’ve written, find the most compelling ideas, and do another round of freewriting to generate more ideas.
You could identify the questions/gaps in your understanding and look for more sources to round out your argument.
