Photographing night sky that shows clear star trails with some visible degree of curvature
PHOTOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT Take a photo of the night sky that shows clear star trails with some visible degree of curvature. Star trails are images taken of the night sky with long exposure times, such that the motion of stars across the sky is revealed (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_trail). In this project you will take your own star trails image that not only reveals the motion of stars across the sky, but allows you see the true colours of individual stars as well. Method 1. Select a camera that can take images with long exposure times. If using your cell phone, many camera apps allow you to either take multiple images or one long image in a light trains or star trails mode. If you go the multiple images route, you will have to combine these images into one as a later step using software like StarStax (free) or Photoshop (if you happen to have it). 2. Find a space where you can view a large fraction of the night sky. You may also want to have a space where you are able to plug in your device. 3. Connect your camera to a tripod or home-made apparatus that ensures your camera will stay in a fixed position for an extended period of time. 4. Take a long-exposure image of the night sky (at least 30 minutes) that reveals the motion of the night sky in the form of star trails. In testing your setup though, you may want to consider doing 5 minute exposures just to make sure everything works. Your final image should show clear star trails and stars having a range of colours. The latter might only be visible after adjusting your image’s properties. Note: you may also get aircraft and satellites in your picture. This is not a problem. Submission Your submission should consist of one file that contains your image on a single page, followed additional pages with answers to the following reflection questions: 1. What equipment did you use, from what location did you take your photo, on what date and at what time? When discussing what equipment you used be sure to state the type of camera or cell phone that was used and explain how you kept the camera or cellphone still while taking the star trail image . If you used a cellphone, also discuss the app you used to take the images and if the app has a star trails mode. 2. What do the difficulties you faced during this project tell you about the kinds of difficulties professional astronomers face in trying to make similar observations? How do they overcome them? (That is, what specific strategies do they use in terms of using specialized equipment, observing from specific locations or at specific time?) 3. What did you learn about your target object that you didn’t know before? 4. If you were tasked with doing this project again next year, how would you improve your results? • DO NOT USE AN IMAGE FOUND ONLINE. DO NOT USE AI TO CREATE AN IMAGE.
