Case Study Assignment #2 is about Evidence based Decision making! The chart is supposed to be the collection of evidence you need to create your plan. There are LOTS of facts provided in the case. Some you absolutely need. Others you might need based on what solution to the problem you ultimately want to create. This is not about scientific evidence. There is no science to the correctional case. It is an operational and clinical one. You have to APPLY what you are reading not take it so literally.
SOAPING and/or SBARING a situation can support your framework. It can help you take a situation a part and decipher what information is known, needed and potentially extraneous. For example, if your framework includes a vision statement. What do I know would help me create the right vision. Document that. What is missing? Put that in the missing column.
If your framework says, create a planning team. What do you know from the case about who might be available for the team? What don’t you know that you need to know.
Here are some of the questions that students typically raise and answers that should help.
Do I need to use the table that is given? No, it is marked “example” and there are comments in the content that reinforce that you have latitude. I have tried to provide helpful hints and some edits to make the completion of the template easier. But you may use your own format. What is important is that you have the following elements:
Each Relevant Data Element that you either know or need
The applicable step in your planning framework to which it applies
- Whether the data element is known or necessary
The classification of that data element (subjective/objective)
The source of the data element and or the source from which you will find the element
Can I have additional elements in my table? Absolutely. Just make sure you don’t go overboard, and feel free to have a comment column if that helps you further clarify?
- What if my framework wasn’t correct in the previous assignment? Then go back to the previous week’s lecture. There are articles there that dictate steps. The landing page has some recommended steps and there is always GOOGLE 🙂 You need a framework, else your thought processes won’t be organized and you can’t effectively classify the data.
- What if I am still stuck? PLEASE, please reach out. This step is critical to your overall plan and solution. You can’t solve the problem effectively if you don’t have the right information and planning structure.
