Growing up as a kid, I never really knew what I was doing with my life, or what I wanted to do, I just liked trying many different things. I remember one time, when I was around the age of 8, I perfected baking my first cake, and the first thing that I said afterward was “I want to be a baker when I grow up”; but of course that has changed now. Regardless, My curiosity has gotten bigger over the years. The more I questioned life, the more I wanted to know—it’s one of the exciting things about living in my opinion. During my years, I developed many skills, which had greatly benefited me. I have been playing piano for 9 years, badminton for 3 to 4 years, and have spent most of my time researching the studies of Psychology and Philosophy; sometimes I would write research papers for fun. Despite all of these skills I had in my life, I did not have a clue about what I wanted to pursue for my career. That changed when I took biology in 10th grade. I was never really fond of biology at first, but my perspectives about it changed. Biology is such an interesting topic to me; it is the study of life after all. It’s truly fascinating knowing that the different cells inside our body had created evolution, had made all of us different from each other, giving us biodiversity in this world. The more I had learned biology at that time, the more my love grew for it…That’s when I knew I wanted to pursue a career in science. I have applied to universities all around Canada recently, applying for programs related to sciences. It was a very stressful moment for me, but I encouraged myself that my hard work would pay off…Until I got a letter from TMU. “We are therefore unable to give further consideration to your application.” Very disappointing words that I had read in my first rejection letter. I had read through more of the letter, only to find the reason why they had rejected my applications, I was missing a document. I had many emotions mixed around me, confusion, stress, anxiety…I was sure I submitted all my documents. I had asked my counselor for help, and after a while everything had been sorted out; that was what I thought at least. I got another decision letter later in the day, stating the same words, “We are therefore unable to give further consideration to your application.” What had I done wrong this time? The panic started to hit me even more, I had been stressed for hours not knowing what to do. After a talk with the undergraduate admissions office, it turned out to be a misunderstanding. I had sent the document the same day I got the rejection letter, so there was no possible chance they could have seen it. This was heartbreaking for me. I could not accept the fact that I had been rejected from TMU. Toronto Metropolitan University. I had envisioned myself in a graduation cap with the name of this university emblazoned across the certificate. Having research science programs across all of Canada, what drew me to the university’s bachelor program was the variety of biology subjects included in your program, from Biology and Organic chemistry to Molecular biology laboratory and experimental design, which connects to my pursuit of biological research in life. Ever since I discovered the beauty of biology and life, it has inspired me to want to work in a lab and hopefully make discoveries. I have also researched more deeply about the program and saw that you guys include a psychology class, which is also something I’ve been very passionate about in a long time. My love for psychology gave me the reason to also apply to your psychology program. Growing up with the society around me in Kuwait and going through my experiences with other individuals, I have come to question everything in life and the desire of people’s intentions, and it would always come down to one question for me—“what made them do that?”, and that question alone is what attracts me for knowledge. I think that our main issue with psychological disturbances however is mental illnesses. Mental illnesses have become a serious issue in the world and have always been, especially in today’s generation, where individuals even tend to consider it a “norm”, which I find disheartening. Individuals don’t consider taking it seriously as they should, even though it can be a horrible thing to witness. People tend to judge too easily and not consider the cons that come with dealing with an illness. The brain is the most powerful source in our body—it helps us do things as a human biologically and is what makes us make moral decisions in our lives. I find it heartbreaking that there is not enough awareness in the world of the beauty of science, it’s the only reason why we are here today. Biology has given us life, Chemistry has given us our everyday needs, including the oxygen we breathe and the daily uses of items in our lives. Psychology has given the ability of individuals to have moral rights and live in a society. Science it what brings people together—what makes the world a better place. I am only a human being, meaning that I have a limit and that I cannot change the world, but I am willing to try and express the true meaning of science. I know, with utmost certainty, that studying at TMU, one of the top research universities in Canada, will help me obtain the knowledge that I desire, and give me a voice to guide others toward the importance of science, for it’s what makes us citizens have life in this world.
