Your assignment after you submit your Comparison Paper is to go online and choose an artwork from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for your Formal Analysis Paper (go to their website http://www.lacma.org/ (Links to an external site.)). Go to LACMA and click on Search Collections. Or go directly to the link: https://collections.lacma.org/Links to an external site. then click on Curatorial Area (then click on European or American).
Normally, you would look for a work that is on display so that if we visited the museum, you would examine it up close for your Formal Analysis paper (aka the Museum Paper Assignment); but we don’t have that option this term. The Formal Analysis Paper assignment is posted on our Home Page in Canvas (called Course Handouts). You are selecting an artwork for instructor approval (that’s why I call it a proposal.)
For this “second paper” assignment, once you are in LACMA’s website, go to Search Collections, search only the European (Painting or Sculpture) or American Art collections, and only for the years 1350 to 1850. Click on the images to get a closer view, and select one that you find intriguing. Then, once you have decided on one or two options, copy and paste the ID information, which includes the title, artist, date and location in the museum, usually in the Ahmanson building, 3rd Floor, and LACMA’s acquisition number for it. Follow the example I’ve posted in the next tab. Put your proposal on a Word .doc, convert to .pdf and submit it here. I will make sure that your artwork selection is one that would be covered in our course: Western Art between the dates 1350 to 1850, and I will give approval for this artwork as your topic for your formal analysis paper if it fits the criteria.
