The scope of practice of the advanced practice nurse varies from state to state, therefore it is necessary to review the rules and regulations of the state in which the nurse practitioner will practice.
The nurse practitioner in Georgia can be defined as someone who provides advanced practice nursing care and medical services to individuals, families, and groups, with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention, in addition to the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic diseases. To diagnose and manage clients’ health-care problems, the nurse practitioner works with a variety of individuals from the interprofessional team as needed (Regulation of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, 2024). Within the state of Georgia, there are certain requirements to practice as a nurse practitioner. These requirements include having an active nursing license in the state of Georgia. In addition, an official transcript must be presented demonstrating graduation with a master’s or higher degree in nursing for the appropriate nurse practitioner specialty, as well as evidence of advanced pharmacology, advanced physical assessment, and pathophysiology course completion. To become a nurse practitioner in the state of Georgia, it is necessary to have one of these requirements complete; completed 500 hours of practice as an advanced practice registered nurse, graduation from a graduate level post-master’s certificate in an advanced practice registered nurse practitioner specialty, or the completion of a Georgia Board-approved advanced practice registered nurse re-entry or refresher course (Regulation of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, 2024). Moreover, to maintain practice, an advanced practice registered professional nurse in Georgia must renew their license, submit a renewal application for advanced nursing practice, attest to advanced practice in accordance with Georgia laws and rules, and pay the renewal fee.
To compare, in the state of Florida, a nurse practitioner provides care to patients by prescribing, dispensing, and administering medications, ordering diagnostic tests and physical and occupational therapy, monitoring and managing patients with stable chronic diseases, and establishing behavioral problems, diagnosis, and making treatment recommendations. Requirements to practice as a nurse practitioner in Florida include completion of a program leading to a master’s degree in a nursing clinical specialty area, including preparation for specialized practitioner skills. Additionally, applying to the department and providing proof of a current license and certification from an appropriate board are required (The 2023 Florida Statutes, 2024).
Comparing the state of Georgia versus the state of Florida, it is important to understand that the nurse practitioner scope of practice is restricted in both states. In Florida, the nurse practitioner is unable to operate autonomously. They can still provide care as a primary care provider, order physical therapy, sign death certificates, and sign disabled person placard forms. Additionally, there are limitations in place for prescribing medications, particularly schedule II drugs, but they may prescribe medications under a written shared agreement with a physician. They can also prescribe class II drugs, but only for seven days (Wiesen, 2024). In Georgia, much like the Florida nurse practitioner, the nurse practitioner cannot practice autonomously. As a result, they must be supervised, delegated, or managed by a physician for their entire career. Nurse practitioners may prescribe medications if their collaborating physician delegated the responsibility, but they cannot prescribe schedule II drugs. They additionally are restricted from signing disabled person placard forms. In Georgia, a nurse practitioner can only sign a death certificate with the permission of their collaborating physician. After comparing the scope of practice of the nurse practitioner in these two states, we can see while they are both restricted, the Florida nurse practitioner can do things more independently than the nurse practitioner in Georgia (Wiesen, 2024).
