Research Project on the New York State Sexual Offender Registry
Research Project on the New York State Sexual Offender Registry
How to successfully complete the NYS Sexual Offender Registry
You will introduce the topic and then you answer each of the first part questions of the research project by way of a question and then a bullet point for the answer. A word of note – some sexual offenders listed in each ZIP Code will be listed multiple times either in alias form or a slightly different spelling of their name. Sometimes that is the way they were booked and convicted so they will show up multiple times, but they are the same person. Giving the wrong account of the total number of sexual offenders in your ZIP Code and a breakdown as to how many seem to be the same person using different fashions or their names or complete aliases.
Make sure to give a short history and background paragraph about the NYS Sexual Offender Registry. This information can be found on the registry website.
As an example, below:
Utilizing the New York State Sexual Offender Registry, I analyzed the following ZIP Codes and accumulated these statistics about each ZIP Code:
· In the 12309 ZIP Code:
o there are 82 sexual offenders registered
o there appears to be seven people listed in their true name and under various aliases sometimes as many as being listed three or four separate times
· In the 12189 ZIP Code:
o There are 28 sexual offenders registered
o There appears to be three people having at least two or three aliases but being the same person
For the second part of the research project, you will be role-playing as a detective or investigator. You will notice that there is a description and the age and gender of the victim as well as the fact the perpetrator utilized a weapon to carry out a rape. Search your ZIP Code or the adjacent ZIP Codes expanding your search until you find sexual offenders that potentially match the age range, the gender, the race, an age range of the victim, and whether a weapon or violence was used in the perpetration of the crime of rape.
You will explain the steps you take as you search the sexual registry for perpetrators matching the description looking for race and age as well as a weapon being used. The New York State Sexual Registry gives extensive information, and you can easily zero in on two perpetrators who fit the description. Tell me your reasoning as you answer the questioning in essay form, and you do well. Make sure that you explain to me all the characteristics you can about the two suspects you have narrowed down on. The New York State Sexual Registry gives addresses for home and work and even whether the suspect has an automobile as well as description and license plate of that automobile. Be sure to include that information in your essay.
The object of the exercise is to utilize a police database and see it is worth as well as perhaps an eye-opener as to the sexual offenders in our neighborhoods so that we as citizens can be better prepared as we watch over our family and our children.
The New York State DCJS is responsible for maintaining New York’s Sexual Offender Registry, which provides New Yorkers information about sex offenders living in their communities. There are three levels of sex offenders – Level 1 (low risk of re-offense), Level 2 (medium risk of re-offense) and Level 3 (high risk of re-offense); risk level is set by a judge after a court hearing.
By law, only Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders are listed on the public directory. This directory now posts multiple photographs of registered sex offenders, as they become available, to provide New Yorkers with additional information to keep their families safe.
In addition to multiple photographs, this directory also includes multiple names (aliases), multiple home and/or work addresses in an offender’s profile, if applicable. Additional information including conviction charge, sentence, supervision conditions (if the offender is on parole or probation and vehicle information also is posted.)
***Note: If you reside outside of New York State use Zip Code 12305 as your fictionalal address.***
