Dear Students:
Through qualitative research please assess the electoral systems that evolve through Democratic institutions in Federal or Unitary systems. Consider multi-party, two-party or single-party systems, evaluating all party ideologies that can be formed through Federations, Confederations, Proportional Representation (PR) and/or Single Party District/Plurality Representation systems. (SDM/PE). Please assess the difference of Presidential Government vs Parliamentary Government. Case study choose one set of countries: US vs Italy Or France vs Italy
Mission: After Reading from ebooks and appropriate Links under Modules III. Please evaluate and define the institutional principles of these two nations Italy vs France or US vs Italy by describing their electoral systems/party system and assess their difference between presidential or parliamentary systems during elections. Consider coalition politics for Italy and popular representation for the US. Through your own critical and comprehensive analysis you can make a comparison and detect the similarities and differences that these two nations have in their past institutions and how they derived as strong states.
Guidelines to Consider for your Research:
Identify these nations governmental systems, party system and electoral system.
Under which sort of system is the government likely to have the easiest time passing sweeping legislation: presidentialism, multi-party parliamentary government, single-party parliamentary government? Why?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various sorts of electoral systems?
Why might a country establish a federal system of government?
Why might it choose to establish or retain a unitary system of government?
What is coalition politics and under which electoral system it occurs?
Is popular representation the same plurality system representation?m
