Cite your material formally but also clearly in the flow of your narrative. (For example … As King writes in “Where Do We Go from Here?” on Page 51, … “larger economic problems confronting the Negro community will only be solved by federal programs involving billions of dollars.” Also formally cite this passage.
You can pick any of this options to go about this paper!
TOPICS:
1. LEADERSHIP: King writes about leadership and the challenges that confronted his leadership. Compare and contrast King’s style of leadership and how he handled those challenges with other sources of material that also discuss leadership, including but not limited to in-class discussion and class guests. Be specific. Provide context to the quotations you use. Set them up in your own words. Do not flimsily string a series of quotes together. King and our guests provided a great deal of contextual material. Use it. For example, King’s leadership style showed in how he dealt with the challenge from organizers of the Black Power movement in CH 2 (which, I know, was not assigned).
2: THEN AND NOW: King touches on several social issues and problems of his era (the 1960s and late 50s.) Identify and connect those issues to issues that our society still faces today. Clearly reference King and compare the challenges and issues he identified with more contemporary references from the additional source material, such as other readings and videos. Have these situations improved, worsened, stagnated? Why? Why not? Again, be thorough and contextual. We have a wealth of contemporary information in the readings that address the events of 2020 and the Black Lives Matter movement.
3: ECONOMIC INEQUALITY: King writes at length about the economic plight of African-Americans in the 1960s, as well as the difficult conditions faced by poor whites and the impoverished of all races. What are some of the potential solutions or approaches he recommended? In King’s point of view, how could these issues begin to be reduced or alleviated? Explain and detail the economic challenges of today. Do you see connections? If so, identify and detail them. Do not stray into other issues in this essay. Stay tightly focused on economics/income inequality/unemployment, etc. We see how the coronavirus pandemic revealed race and class fault lines in our society that are deeper and more cavernous than we might have understood.
4. You can compare and contrast the two different Poor People’s Campaigns.
5. YOUR CHOICE: If you have another idea you would like to research and write about. Please email me — [email protected] — and provide a fat paragraph similar to Nos. 1 through 3 above. Please send your email no later than noon on Friday, February 24, and I will provide a quick response. I am open to pretty much any idea. I likely will only want to help you tighten the focus.
Finally, you are smart, formally educated people. Do not irritate me with sloppy and lazy writing. Spend some time on this paper. You have several week. Use your Precis writings. Many have been foundational pieces of writing that can easily be expanded into a full paper. In fact, as I’ve said, a reason for assigning the regular writing is so you don’t arrive at the mid-term and final papers in a panic and cold without a great deal of material at your fingertips.
